Parenting after a Loss

T & P needed for my sister...

Earlier today I posted how she found out her baby was a girl.  Well she had 2 appts today.  The 2nd one was with the specialist because she is 37.  Their u/s showed a slight thickening of the baby's neck, so they told her that there is a 1 and 17 chance the baby has downs.  The dumb ass Dr also told her she has 3 weeks to decide what to do, because if she has downs she wont succeed and won't go to college.  What kind of a Dr tells you that?????  WTF!!  All of her bloodwork screens have been negative.  Does anyone know any more about this?  My sister is worried sick now.  The baby's other measurements are all normal.

ETA:  She did make an appt with another Dr for Monday to get a 2nd opinion!

  • OMG!  I don't know anything about Downs screening, but your sister needs to find a new doctor.  That is appalling.  So many families with Downs children have said what a tremendous blessing those children have been to them, and it's absolutely revolting that the doctor views "going to college" as succeeding.  Tons of thoughts and prayers to your sister in this difficult time.

  • What an ass! That is awful. I think jeffrae had a screening like that and her baby girl is perfectly healthy.
  • 3 weeks to decide?!!? WTF? I imagine your sister is 20 or so weeks along.  I can't even imagine being spoken to by that doc.  Can I fire him for her? Good grief.  I still hear the 95% chance that everything is fine, but I know that's probably hard to focus on.

  • Holy cow! What an awful thing for the doctor to say!! PP is right, Jeffrae had a similar reading & her LO is totally fine, also a former coworker got a similar possible diagnosis & her baby girl is perfect. Like Mrs. Patterson it said, it digusts me that the doctor deems success by the child going to college. Sending tons of thoughts & prayers to your sister!

  • I'll keep her in my T&P.
  • your sister and her baby will be in my prayers.  i agree that she should consider finding a new doctor.  i think he was out of line in what he said to her about having 3 weeks to decide because of "success".  that is ridiculous, and rather insulting.  so sorry she is going through this  :(

  • Lots of t&p to your sister.  This should have been a happy and exciting day for her, that doctor is such a jerk!

  • Um, I would try to get that dr. fired for his rude a$$ comments. Also, I would slap him in the face. People like him make me sick.

Your sister will be in my prayer. This must be a frightening time.

  • what an idiot doctor. As if going to college is the end all and be all to personal success. Going to college only made me more aware of how little I really know about life. However, all the people with Downs Syndrome that I have had the pleasure of knowing taught me more about life and living then my 18 years of school ever will.

I am so sorry that your sis is going through this and I am so sad that she has such a POS for a doctor.
