Adoption

How long do foreign adoptions take?

I was just wondering how long foreign adoptions normally take. My mom is adopting 3 of my cousins in the Phillipines(my uncle died of cancer and my aunt-in-law is out of the picture), and it seems to be taking a long time.

Re: How long do foreign adoptions take?

  • Every country is different and has its own requirements and process.  Some foreign adoptions can be completed in a year, but my own, from Peru, will take about two.

If your mother is amenable to discussing it, you could ask her about the process and what stage she is in.  She most likely has a working timeframe.  The fact that she is looking to adopt your cousins could also speed up (or slow down) her progress.

If you don't mind me asking, how long has your mother been in the process?

  • She's been in the process since 2007, but I know there have been some slow-downs along the way(finding the birth mother, two of my grandparents dying, taking adoption classes).

I think they are done with classes and are in the homestudy process. I know I sent the adoption agency a letter recently saying it was fine with me that my cousins become my siblings.

I guess I'm just impatient for some new brothers and a new sister! Smile

  • After the homestudy, she will need to get approval from US Immigration (CIS).  Then, everything will depend on the Philippines.
