HS Reunions: Question & Random Poll

So I have my first high school reunion this summer and the deadline to RSVP is this week. I think it would've been fun to go but it's not something I really want to go in particular since I already keep in touch with everyone that I want to be from high school. But they made it a 21+ only event (w/an open bar), so that quickly made the decision for me since I feel like it's too early for me to leave our LO with a sitter for a night.

So that got me thinking...since I haven't been to a reunion before. Are they usually adults-only events?

And just for fun, let's have a poll on reunions!

Re: HS Reunions: Question & Random Poll

  • I have never gone to a H/S reunion. But for college, there is a tailgate before the football game and everyone brings their kids to that. Then the evening party at a bar is adults only. So it's a way of allowing both.

  • I had really wanted to go to my 10-year, but I had tickets with backstage passes to "Lion King" that weekend that I wasn't about to pass up!  This year would have been my 15-year, but they decided not to have one and wait for our 20-year.  Yikes, this makes me feel old!

  • I had zero desire to go to my hs reunion. Well, actually, I went to two high schools and I did go to the reunion for the one I didn't actually graduate from. But that's because I had gone to school with those girls from 7th-11th grade. Neither reunion was open to kids but I'm sure the ones in the future probably will be.

  • We are going to DH's 20thHS reunion this August. I think they have activties during the day where they bring the family. There is an event Saturday night which is for adults only.

I've had informal reunions with my HS classmates and they're always soo much fun :-).

  • I'm from a really small town and I keep in touch with a lot of my highschool friends.  I had a good time at my 10 year reunion, but I felt like people hadn't changed enough and that everyone went with something to prove.

Ours had a "family day" at the lake and then an adults only dinner.  A lot of my friends had kids by the time the reunion rolled around maybe that factored into deciding to have a family day.

  • I didn't go to my 5 year reunion, but I did go to my 10 year.  It was a lot of fun, but I really just hung out with the same friends I always do.  It was nice to see everyone else too.

I am guessing it was adults only. I dont' remember the invite specifically saying that though. It was in the French Quarter on a Saturday night.  I know a lot of people from my class have kids now, but none of them brought them. Maybe people didn't come b/c they didn't want to bring their kids out late.

  • We didn't go to our 10 year reunion (MH and I went to the same high school).  We had a pretty large graduating class--I want to say it was close to 500 students.  Like you, we already keep in touch with many people we actually want to see.  There are a couple of people I'd like to see again, but I didn't know if they'd actually be at the reunion so we just didn't go.  We don't regret not going.
  • I went to my 5 and 10 yr reunions (pre-DH), but couldn't justify the cost of the last one, esp with DH now.  And he would have been bored anyway.  But ours are always adults only.
  • I was on the planning committee for my 10th renunion (in 2002) and it was great because we had a laid back BBQ in Golden Gate Park.  Not many folks had kiddos then, but those who did brought them and it felt way less prententious being a BBQ...no one wanted to have a formal dinner or cocktail party...the BBQ was very much "come as you are" and we had about at 80% turn out!
  • if i was local i might have gone to our 10 year (there was no 5 yr) but it entailed getting a $300 plane ticket and it just wasn't worth it to me to take off work, buy a ticket, etc. i don't regret not going.  i did go with DH to his 10 yr reunion and it was just ok not that exciting but maybe that's b/c i didn't know anyone :P
