Still swaddeling? How old?

We're still swaddeling DD at almost 5 months and I dont know how to stop.  I want to be able to put her down 'drowsy but awake' and let her self soothe, but it just hasnt worked so far.  How old is your swaddeled baby?  When and how do you plan on stopping??

  • I just stopped this week, but my DD is younger than yours, so I guess I"m not much help...

  • I'm still swaddling at 5months and a week. she won't go to sleep unless swaddled. I'm going to try to stop this weekend so dh can be home to help. It is not going to be pretty.

  • I've tried to lay DS down w/out his swaddle, but he always wakes up.  So I end up swaddling him really loose.  Sometimes that helps.  I guess I'm going to keep doing it as long as he fits into the swaddle, I'm trying to transition him with the loose swaddle but I don't know if that will work.

  • We still swaddle at night b/c DS's arms flail around so much while he's sleeping. I honestly don't know when or how to stop.

  • I'm going to stop soon, I think - both of my boys seem to be becoming thumb suckers and I don't want to inhibit that by swaddling.
  • We still swaddle DD one arm out.  We tried unswaddling her over the weekend and it was a disaster.  I won't be trying again for another few weeks.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with "extended swaddling".  We are still swaddling DD at home for bed time and naps.  However, she naps at daycare without the swaddle just fine.  So who knows.  She will be 5 months next week.

  • I'm still swaddling when needed.  I've heard from my Happiest Baby class that you can transition out of it by first leaving one arm out and then both arms out. HTH.
  • Around 5 months, I started not swaddling for naps so that she would be used to it for daycare, but still swaddled at night.  We had tried around 4 months to not swaddle at night and it was a disaster.  Just before she turned 6 months, we swaddle one arm out for two nights and then in just a sleep sake.  She did very well right away so she must have been ready.
