Pregnant while using Mirena

What are the chances of this happening?  I have felt nauseous for the last 2 wks, super tired, very emotional, boobs sore, peeing all the time , and poor sleep now.  I have never had a period while on Mirena so Im not sure if Im late or what?

We would be exstatic for  another baby ....just wondering if I this is even a chance since I have my IUD in?

Re: Pregnant while using Mirena

  • It's rare, but it happens. You should probably poas. GL :)

  • I think it is possible, very unlikely but possible.  I have Mirena too and I know that SERIOUS complications can arrise for you and the baby if you don't get it out quickly.  You really need to find out if you really think you might be, especially if you would be very sad to loose the baby.  Good luck!  Oh and just for the record I'd be a little upset if I paid as much as Mirena was and was pregnant.  Sorry, hope that doesn't sound bad.  :)
  • That same thing happened to me.  I POAS and had a faint positive line.  I didn't want to freak so I waited a couple days and did it again- no line at all.  After doing research I found there is such a thing called chemical pregnancy.  I believe that is what happened to me because I had all the symptoms.

Since then nothing like that has happened to me to that extent but the mirena does have side effects that mimic pregnancy.  My main fear was what do I do about the mirena if I am preg? It has a high rate of miscarriages if and when they take it out.  That scared the heck out of me!

  • Very unlikely..the IUD is as effective as a tubal, if not more so. When I had it in I had all pregnancy symptoms as well, and no period while on it [for 9 months]. I POAS several times and it was always negative.

So while it wouldn't hurt to POAS, the odds of you really being pregnant are probably pretty slim.

  • I don't have Mirena but I recenly had very strong pregnancy symptoms...they ended up being related to ovarian cysts.  Could have fooled me!

  • Don't had a Mirena myself...

but during my time as an OB RN I've seen it happen more than once (women coming in saying that they got pregnant with a Mirena in place)... one woman even had the Mirena inside the placenta (pretty risky and scary)

I'd take a test or call your dr.

  • I got pregnant using the Mirena, and I believe another lady on this board did as well. When I went to the doctor, he said that my uterus was starting to expell it but he couldn't say whether that happened before or after implantation. (as in, did I get pregnant because it moved or did I get pregnant and then it moved)

But there were a few times when I had pregnancy symptoms and was not pregnant. But they always went away within a few days.

All you can really do is POAS and see what happens.

  • Well I had all the same pregnancy symptoms a few months back. I POAS and it was negative, the next day I started my period.

  • I got pregnant with an IUD.  Like the PP my body started to expel it.  The doc removed it when I was about 7 weeks and all is well so far :)
