F/U: CDs (and one last question)

Thank you so much for sharing your CD insight with me a few days ago!  It helped more than you can imagine.

I went ahead and placed an order with both Mom's Milk Boutique and Abby's Lane last night!  I still can't believe we're really doing this as I had absolutely no intention of CD up until a few weeks ago.  I know our families/friends are going to give us a rash of crap when they find out we are CDing.  Stick out tongue  Whatever.  I think that CD will save us a lot of money.  Doing an enormous amount of research and buying online, rather than locally, is also going to save us money!  Yes

I just got an e-mail confirming that Mom's Milk has already shipped my items!  I took advantage of their current Thirsties discount (15% off--thanks for the tip, Lori!) and picked up some Size 1 Duo Wraps, a couple of Size 1 Duo Diapers, and a couple of hemp inserts.

From Abby's Lane, I bought a couple of Duo Wraps that were not in stock at Mom's Milk, some Snappis, a Wahmies wet bag and two Wahmies pail liners.  I took Jamie's advice and signed up with their Yahoo Group and used a 5% off coupon code.

After much research, I'm planning to buy 36 unbleached infant Indian prefolds from The Natural Life Store.  They had a great price and only $6 flat rate shipping, even to Hawaii!

So here's my question: If you used PFs, did you buy both infant AND premium sizes upfront?  On one hand, I like the idea of getting them all at once and prepping them all at once, but do you think it's worth waiting to buy the premium sizes until baby is bigger (maybe I'll decide 36 PFs are too much at that point or I might want to move to a different diapering system by then)?

Hooray Nicole!  That's fantastic!  We bought 36 infant and premium sized prefolds upfront but only prepped the infant sized ones before Libby was born (to make sure CDing would be for us).  Then, around 6 weeks old, I prepped the premium sized ones.  That said, we still use both.  Sometimes I just trifold the infant sized ones and place it in the wrap...it's a little more trim than the premiums.  We did have to fold down the premiums in the back when the Duos (size 2) were snapped on the smallest setting.  Libby's tall so we've gone ahead and started using the Duos with no snaps now and they fit her well (although the waist tabs are nearly overlapping) and we don't need to fold down the premiums.  They are bulkier than the infants, so if need be we just use the infants but I am glad we have both.

  • hey nicole, yay for CDs! you'll love it. and as for friends/family giving you crap--i know how that is--just be confident in what you are doing is so much better for baby's bum and the earth!

as for PFs, since i bought all mine used, prepping wasn't an issue--but i too was wondering about sizes. i went ahead and bought 24 infant sized and was glad i did--the next size up would have been huge on her in that first couple months. i had 24 PF, 8 fitteds, 8 covers and 2 AIO. i would hold off ordering TOO much, as your preference may change. i have gradually moved away from PFs, as the bigger and wigglier Ellery gets, the harder they are to put on. hth!

  • I think 24 would be enough.  I just bought the infant ones first (from Abby's Lane) and ended up getting bigger ones from a different website (greenmountaindiapers).

  • i think 3 dozen infant sized is good but you don't need that many premium....you'll go through fewer as your baby gets older.  i also wouldn't prep them all in case you decide PFs aren't for you...in fact, you could even hold off on getting any premium PFs until you try CDs for yourself.

i prefer GMD PFs just b/c there are more sizes to fit your baby better. yes the other infant/premium size can work but you may end up having to fold the front or back down to get them to fit and it makes the diaper even bulkier (PFs are already pretty bulky)

and, FWIW, i never thought we'd CD either. i asked DH in passing just as an after thought and was surprised he had a strong opinion about it. i didn't really have a strong preference but now i am soooo glad we took the leap!
