So here's an interesting one: I have ranch dressing to go on my salad and I just so happened to look at the ingredients on the back. It says the dressing contains eggs. I would assume these are cooked, right? I know we're not suppose to have Ceasar dressing because of the raw eggs but now I'm wondering about my ranch salad dressing.
Anyone know the answer to this one?
Re: Ranch dressing?
If it's in a bottle- it was pasteurized to be bottled, so you're fine.
The problem that they talk about with salad dressings made with eggs (from my understanding) are ones that are freshly made- like at a restaurant that makes their own.
I have never heard of anyone getting food poisioned from Ranch dressing, I am sure it's an ingredient, but nothing to worry about. Enjoy your salad.
I thought we couldn't eat Ceasar dressing because it contains anchoives...? It doesn't stop me, I still eat it!!
no, it's b/c freshly made contains raw eggs.
thanks for the clarification, it's my favorite type of salad to eat
All store bought dressings are pasturized. We had this discussion quite awhile back, but came to the concensus that if its store bought, you're ok. This means that blue cheese, caesar and ranch are all ok. Mayo is made from cooked eggs and almost all cream based dressings contain mayo. Homemade Caesar dressings would be a concern because they contain raw eggs, and non-pastureized blue cheese crumbles are a no-no because of the risk of listerosis. Every pregnancy book that I have goes thru the list of dos and donts when it comes to food, so you could try looking these up in there.
If you're buying a product that has been stored on a shelf & not refrigerated, there is no way it can contain uncooked eggs without running the risk of poisoning more than just the pregnant population. No manufacturer would run that risk.
I don't listen to most of the 'rules'... I don't go out of my way to 'spite' them or wear an obnoxious little "First Tri Fail" badge- but if I want a Turkey Sandwich, dammit I'm having one.
I've started to turn this corner as well, and have in fact had 2 turkey sandwiches in the past 3 weeks.
I was terrified of everything at first, but now have a much different philosophy. I didn't live my life in fear of food before BFP, I'm not going to turn into a loon now.
