2nd Trimester

Shocked at quad screen results...

The nurse called me this morning and said I have a 1 in 5 risk of Down's and 1 in 34 risk of something else (I was too busy shaking and trying to write notes to catch it)  Before she called me she already had me booked at the hospital tomorrow for genetic counseling and another ultrasound. I am so terrified...I really wasn't expecting this!  :(

Re: Shocked at quad screen results...

  • I am sorry your going thru this, good thoughts coming your way. Keep in minde that this doesnt mean anything is wrong with your lo. Those test have a high false positive rate and you hear about alot of women that had bad resulst and perfectly healthy babys. Think positive mamma. :hugs:

  • I kind of know how you're feeling right now, I was called with similiar news and went for a level 2 ultrasound that was still kind if inconclusive.

But I wanted to encourage you.  I know of several women who were told their baby had down syndrome and their babies were born perfectly normal.  Some people make decisions to end the pregnancy based on the results of these tests, and that is your choice, but just keep in mind that sometimes medicine is wrong and there may be a perfectly healthy baby in there.

I am praying for you, this is a tough situation to be in.  See the genetic counselor and see what is next.  Our choice was an amino (the only way to find out for sure if the baby has DS), but that carries a risk of miscarriage and I decided I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I had an amnio to satisfy my curiousity and lost my baby as a result.  But that was my choice.  You have to make the right choice for you and your family.

  • My thoughts are with you!

Remember, it's not a "false positive" it's just a statistical analysis. Let's use the correct terminology. The screen didn't say the baby had Down's (that would be a "false positive" if the baby doesn't). It said there's an 80% chance the baby DOESN'T. That's why they recommend doing the additional testing if you come back with a result like that.

At any rate, stay brave, stay calm, and I hope everything turns out all right.

  • I'm sorry!  I hope everything works out and they misread the results!
  • Don't panic! These are just initial screening results. It sounds like you are getting good care, and won't have to wait too long to find out some more conclusive results. These are just statistics....not diagnostic data on your little one. Hang in there and be good to yourself and your little one!
  • I'm sorry. I hope they're wrong and eveything turns out ok.
  • Thanks everyone for your good thoughts and wishes...I am trying to be calm but I'm sure I won't sleep a wink tonight! I'm looking online and what I see is actually making me feel a little better. Lots of people have this and their babies turn out just fine. Fingers crossed mine is one of them!
  • Try not to panic.  I've heard about women getting positives and then finding out the baby was perfectly healthy at delivery.  Everything will be fine!  Hopefully you get good results tomorrow!
  • I hear lots of horror stories about those, that's why we decided not to do one. I hope everything turns out ok!
  • I am so sorry you are having to endure this.  Sending you lots of good thoughts for a healthy baby.

I'm so sorry that you got this news--but just remember that even with 1/5 odds, the odds are still in your favor that your LO is perfectly healthy. I'm glad they're able to get you in tomorrow to get some answers!

  • Are you really only 13 weeks?  The Quad screen shouldnt be done until 15 weeks.  It would come back with a false positive if you did the test too early.

Maybe you mean 1st trimester screening?

I hope you appointment tomorrow goes well!   I agree with what the other ladies said, just remember that this test doesnt tell you anything for sure.
