Books or classes for newborn care?

I have read just about every book there is on being pregnant, but I need a good book or class suggestion for the care of a newborn. My DH is literally FREAKED about taking care of a newborn and while I am not necessarily freaked about it, I get a little anxious thinking about all of the things I don't know. I have never really been around babies fresh out of the oven, so I don't know how much I am supposed to feed, how long they should sleep, what I can and can't do etc...

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance...

  • Right now I'm reading Baby 411.

  • I'm reading Baby 411 as well. So far, so good. It's practical and down to earth.

  • Baby 411 is decent from what I've heard...

What to Expect During the First Year is awesome...it's month by month, which is great - I'm actually reading it, flagging pages and highlighting things that I feel are important.

Also, my Childbirth class has it.  It's a 6-week programme, and the last class is all Baby Care Basics.  That might help him.  Check a local hospital or something...

  • I'm reading HEADING HOME WITH YOUR NEWBORN: FROM BIRTH TO REALITY and really enjoying it. It's written by doctors but its not dry at all.

I'll also be getting Dr. Spock.

  • I took the hospital class on babycare, and actually learned some things I couldn't from a book. (Like practicing swaddling on a doll, so I knew how to do it.)

But even if you don't read a book or take a class, the hospital nurses are generally happy to show you how to change a diaper, swaddle a baby, etc. They also give you discharge instructions like not getting the umbillical coard stump wet (depending on your docs beliefs on that), how to care for a circ, and what symptoms mean you should call the doc.

And Baby 411 is a great book.[

  • I haven't read anything yet, but I had wanted to read happiest baby on the block, and then found that netflix had the dvd for it, so we ordered it from netflix and dh and I watched it together.  If you have netflix, they actually have quite a few dvd's on there related to baby care that you can browse through and then you and your DH can watch and learn together.  Just a thought.

  • I am also doing a class at our hospital.  It's childbirth, newborn care and breastfeeding all in 6 weeks.  It's been very useful and informational so far.  I'm really excited about next week- we'll be bathing, diapering and swadding newborn dolls to practice.  I know it sounds kind of silly, but I think I'll feel much more confident after I've practiced all of that!  And I like the class format because you can ask questions... also, since it's through the hospital where we'll be giving birth, we get specific info on what our hospital offers.  I think it will cut down on the number of questions that we have right after birth and we won't be as nervous to take the baby home.  It certainly won't eliminate questions and anxiety, but I think we'll be more confident than we would have been without the class!
