What's the worst part of teething?

DD has three little white dots on her gums (one top and two bottom). She's been a little more fussy than normal, but it hasn't been too bad. If she hadn't been pulling on her ears for the past week, I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it. So what's the worst part of teething? Before the teeth break through? The "white dot" stage when they haven't fully come through? I just want to know what we're in for...

Also, we've been giving her Sophie to chew on and plan on giving her some teething rings tomorrow. I've also heard a cold washcloth can help, along with teething tablets, Infant Tylenol and Orajel. What else can we give her? What brand of teething tablets do y'all recommend? TIA!

Re: What's the worst part of teething?

  • I think "they" say that the worst is usually right before that break through.

Leo was like your DD - really chill about teething. Until the molars. Dear God, the molars. Charlie is a big huge wuss, and I live in fear of his molars.

  • None of his first teeth were bad for us. The four bottom ones he has and middle top ones were easy peasy. I didn't even know he was teething until they popped through on the bottom! The teeth next to the middle top ones (don't know what they're called) were hellish from beginning to end - I didn't even know he was teething yet b/c his gums weren't swollen or red, but he had to have been. He reverted back to waking 15,731 times a night and was fussy like I'd never seen him before. Once they broke through the surface he was back to normal.Start to finish it was a little over a week.

Whatever he's working on now is bad too. I'm thinking molars, but it's been like a month off and on. I keep thinking he has an ear infection, but I take him in and his ears are fine. We use the Hyland's teething tablets, though honestly I don't think they really do a lot for him. Motrin is what really helps, though I guess that doesn't help you since she's still too young!

The white dot stage lasted a week or two for us and then they broke the surface. Hope she's back to normal soon!

  • For DD, the wost part has been right before they break through.  She is working on two more and is hardly eating and skipping naps.  DD loves Sophie, the frozen teething rings, frozen washcloth, or just about anything she can get her hands on.  Hyland's teething tablets work the best for her.  I would not recommend Orajel.  Someone (maybe Tatyee) mentioned that it is dangerous if swallowed -- numbing the throat (I think).  If she is really in pain, we will alternate tylenol & motrin.

  • The worst part is as they are breaking through the gums.  And then molars.
  • Yep, right before they bust through.  Baby A was a MESS for a week or so until her first top tooth broke through, and as soon as it did she was like a different baby!  Happier than I've ever seen her.  But unfortunately I think the other three on the top started coming the following day because she's been fussy ever since.  Her symptoms are general fussiness and waking a lot during the night.  And even then it's hard to tell what's going on because she never drools or runs a temp.  So, we're proof that they can be teething without showing any of the typical signs.
  • So have they broken through yet if I can see and feel the tooth but they're just little dots right now? Or is "breaking through" the part where you can actually see the whole tooth coming through?
  • Ditto the others.  A has been working on her top lateral incisors (the same ones Libby was talking about) for what seems like for.ev.er.  I can literally see the tooth and it will not break the surface.  Needless to say, A has been a babbling mess the last couple days/weeks.

We use Hyland's teething tablets & Motrin....I also give her teething toys (Sophie, this vibrating teether are huge hits) or a mesh feeder filled with ice.
