Baby monitor question

The cost of a video or movement sensor monitor is hard to swallow, so I always thought I'd go with a traditional audio monitor, but I am skeptical I'll get enough peace of mind to rest at night. Any experience with any of these types of monitors and how much your minds were put at ease? Should we spring for at least a video monitor?

ETA: Our house is two stories, and while our bedroom isn't far from the nursery, I want to feel at ease if we're downstairs while he's in his crib. Will audio be enough?

Re: Baby monitor question

  • Honestly, because of the price of the video monitor I went with a regular one (at first). I didn't like the one I got because the static was ridiculous and my house was also 2 story back then so it didnt help. I ended up getting a video monitor when he turned 4 months because we moved into our new house which is bigger and he started sleeping in his own room. My personal opinion is go with the video monitor because it really will help you feel at ease. I think the fact that you can actually SEE the baby really helps your nerves.

  • I don't have personal experience yet but I'll tell you what we did and why. As cool as I think the video monitor is DH & I agreed that since we live in a one story place we would just get the audio. We got the Avent Dect Tech monitor and it's really cool. :) If we lived in a 2 story we would have gotten the video monitor.

For the first 3 months he'll be sleeping in our room @ night and taking naps in his room during the day so we decided the audio would be sufficient.

  • Does having two stories increase static, or does it just depend on the monitor? The audio one I'm looking at has good reviews when it comes to static, but I wonder if two stories just makes that complicated.

  • In your case, since you are unsure, I'd register for both.  You never know what people will buy you!  SIL had an audio monitor for niece.  When nephew cam along, she added the video monitor to see if anyone got it... since I knew she wanted it, DH and I ended up purchasing it for them.

  • I have a video monitor. It's actually a camera, a TV and it has a separate audio-only receiver. You get the best of both. I set up the TV in the dining room and use it when she's napping in her crib (where the camera is). Usually I'll eat when she sleeps. At night we co-sleep so we don't need a monitor until she's 3-4 months in her own crib. Then we'll transfer the TV to our bedroom. I use the sound monitor when I'm doing laundry or something. I have a one-story house. Hope that helps!
  • We thought that the audio was fine....and it was for 2 months until SIL purchased the Summer Infant Video Monitor, which DH thought was a little too pricey. Now that we have one, we are addicted to it. It's so nice to have, especially when B began pulling/kicking his blanket over his face....and we watch him every night. Babies can whine, squirm and cry in their sleep and on the video monitor you can see if they are actually awake...and it helps me to see if he'll put himself back to sleep.

To sum it up, I'd put the video monitor on your registry...it's worth it. :)

  • I'm not sure what we're getting yet.  I haven't even looked into registry items.  I'm thinking audio since it's a one-story house, but DH LOVES his gadgets so he may opt for the video monitor.  Knowing him, he may even set up some kind of webcam so he can monitor her from his smartphone, lol.
  • We didn't use the monitor for the first 2 months while Nico slept in our room. But since we moved him to the crib in his room, the video monitor has been a life saver. It is worth every single penny. It's probably my most favorite item. We have one that's Summer brand. It's handheld and our favorite feature is that you can zoom in and out and move the camera around. We use the monitor every single day. I LOVE it!

  • They have audio monitors with ranges up to 700'.  I can't imagine that you would have reception issues in your house.  I feel like a video monitor is sort of like a doppler.  If you have it, you'll use it, and it might be nice to see what's going on in there, but you may also be more likely to overanalyze and stress out about every little thing.  I don't want a video monitor... but I know a few people who love them.

  • I <3 my sensor moniter. Angel Care. I plan on getting the latest for this new baby. It is the best $100 that was spent on us, quite honestly. The piece of mind was incredible for me as a first time mom.

As for the video moniter....I can see where you would like that for a two story home. If your hubby is the techy type he should be able to hook up a webcam to your crib and link it into your data network. LOL. Not sure how but my dad and BIL both had this hooked up in a way that if you turned on a certain channel on the TV you could see what the camera was viewing.

    GL!
