S/O: Prenatal vitamins

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board--this is my first post here, although I've been lurking for months. MH and I are still in the "gathering info" stage, but we plan for me to go off BC in August.

I take a multivitamin every day, with 100% DV of Folic Acid in it. When I mentioned TTC to my Gyno (in January --we have bumped up our timeline a bit), she said to just stick with my multivitamin for now. If I started taking prenatals, should I also take the multivitamin? Is there a reason to take one over the other?

TIA for responding...you girls have already provided me with tons of info. I'm looking forward to posting more on the board!

Re: S/O: Prenatal vitamins

  • How many mcg of FA are in your daily vitamin? Women TTC should take at least 800mcg (some say 1000mcg). 100% DV for a "typical" adult may not be the same amount as 100% for TTC or pregnant women.

Many recommend starting prenatals 3 or more months prior to TTC. If you start them, you don't need to take a multivitamin with them....that could actually be harmful, because there is such thing as too much of certain vitamins.

    GL!

I agree... I started taking them as soon as I thought about TTC. I wanted to make sure I was in the habit. (Im not very disciplined with that stuff) It wont hurt you to switch from your regular multi to a prenatal. Alot of women take them over regular multi's even when they aren't ttc.

  • Thanks ladies. This is sort of what I thought but I'm already second-guessing myself and overthinking when it comes to the idea that I could do something to screw up a baby.
  • You will do just fine! [:-)]
