RedShoeGirl- Mirena

I didn't want to hijack the Weekly Check-In thread, but I wanted to share my experience with Mirena for you.  I'd had it for about a year now and I love it.  The insertion was really easy for me.  I took some Motrin about an hour before the procedure and it didn't feel anymore uncomfortable to me than a normal Pap smear... just some pressure.  After the procedure, I had some cramping for the next few hours, but nothing too painful.  Since then, I hardly get a period.  I may get one every three months or so, but it's always very light and gone within a few days.  Much less of a hassle than a normal period.

If you have any more questions, just let me know!

Thanks for sharing.  I'm planning to try Mirena as well after I give birth.  My doctor recommended it for me, and it seems like a good option.  I'm glad to hear from someone who has had a positive experience.

  • Awesome, thank you!

Did you have an initial period of bleeding? That seems to be fairly common - that you'll get a week or two of somewhat heavy bleeding before things settle down and your period lightens or disappears (I'm betting on just lightens for me - it never disappeared when I had Implanon so I'm guessing this will be the same).

I did have some light bleeding after it was inserted.  It lasted maybe 3-4 weeks, but it was so light I only needed a panty liner.  My periods weren't heavier than normal, but they didn't start getting lighter until a few months afterwards.

I would say the only downside to the Mirena is I don't really know when my period is going to start.  I just make sure I always have a pad in my purse and I'm okay though.

Do you find that they're fairly regular, or do they just come whenever? (Though I suppose it might depend on how regular they were before as well.)

Thanks for answering all these questions - it's nice to be able to talk to someone who actually has it!

  • You're welcome!  I don't mind answering questions.

I was on the pill before I had the Mirena, so I was pretty regular.  Now, I am not regular at all.  I usually get a period every 2-3 months, but I don't know when it's coming.  But like I said, I just keep a pad in my purse, so I'm never worried that it will pop up unexpectedly.
