Talk to me about not crawling...

So Ryder will be 9 months on the 16th, and he is still not crawling. He rolls everywhere he goes. He can also push his knees and feet up while on his stomach and also move his arms, but he doesn't do it at the same time.

Well last night, he tried to push his arms up on my legs while we were sitting on the floor. Kind of like he was trying to push himself up. Then DH told me that today while sitting in his lap, he pulled himself up to the couch where DH had his toys. He said Ryder did it several times.

Did anyone have a baby that was a late crawler or skipped crawling altogether? Ryder has is 9 month well baby check next Wed and I was gonna talk to his Dr about it then, but thought I would run it by you ladies first. TIA!

Re: Talk to me about not crawling...

  • How much does he weigh?  I have a friend with 3 boys who were always fairly big babies and they all crawled and walked late because they couldn't hold their own weight.  I don't think its super late for him to not be crawling yet, a mom at the playground today told me that her daughter didn't crawl until 11 mo and walked at 16mo.

  • He's not a late crawler yet! Some babies never crawl, Max didn't crawl until he was 13 months old...now that is late, but I wouldn't worry at R's age. Run it past your pedi at his next visit, but try not to worry.

  • My friends daughter didn't crawl until the week after her first birthday. Her pedi just instructed her to keep her on her tummy a lot and encourage her as much as possible.
  • My girls were still doing the belly scoot at 9M and within a few weeks they were full on crawlers. At 13M they are starting to walk so I definitely would not worry yet! It sounds like he is right on track!

  • 9 months isn't late. It's pretty average. But like the others said there's a range of normal. Don't worry. I thought Ben would skip crawling bc he pulled up and wanted to stand but he did crawl. Just not for long. :)

  • Liam started crawling at 11months and 1 week.  By 11 months and 2 weeks he was a pro...it happens fast!  I don't think you have anything to worry about.

  • i wouldnt call 9 months a late crawler... It is not even considered a milestone because so many babies dont do it... I wouldnt worry about it unless he is not hitting any other milestones for his age.
  • T didn't get up on his hands and knees crawl until 11 months but would do this roll push with his back leg and repeat thing from 9 months.  I think crawling is an important milestone, but you can't MAKE a baby crawl.  I don't know if weight has anything to do with it because my good friends boy crawled at 7 months and he was a very big baby (was walking at 10 months).  Tristen started walking at around 14 months, but was a very skilled crawler by then, and now has very good coordination.

  • Thanks ladies. I knew you guys would have some good input. I know you're not suppose to compare your baby to others it just seems like many people I meet ask me if he's crawling yet and when I say no, they tell me how their baby was crawling by now or were earlier. He isn't beyond in any other development. He's eating more solid food (shredded chicken, beans, etc) really well and chewing it all, he talks all the time, can pick up food with his hands and feed himself now, is getting his two top front teeth, and more. He weighs about 22 lbs give or take. So it could be a little harder for him to support himself because he just isn't strong enough yet. We have been encouraging crawling more by placing his toys and keys (which he loves) just far enough away from him so he has to try and get them. Not to mention he has TONS of tummy time now. He doesn't like being on his tummy as much though, so he will roll himself over when he gets frustrated. And when he's sitting up on the floor, he gets his left leg in the crawling position and moves his arms forward, but his right leg gets stuck.
  • Consider G is almost the exact age as Ryder, and he just started wounded-soldier crawling this week. But he's gaining speed! And just started pulling himself up to standing yesterday. For the past few weeks he was sitting indian-style and hopping everywhere - it was painfully slow...and painfully funny to watch. 10 months is the average. Ryder is doing great!
  • Another thing is that kids seem to Focus on one area at a time. Ben was all gross motor skills. And he didn't really start talking til 18 months and he still isn't big on the fine motor skills. My friends DD could say two word sentences by 18 months but didn't walk until 15 months. They all even out by 3 or 4 years old. And it will never matter on his college applications whether he crawled at 7 months or 11 months!
