Re: ??? Weekly Check-in ???

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 7 weeks old tomorrow...my boys are growing up so fast!

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Kinda down about quitting breastfeeding, but otherwise OK. News...hmm. Oh I know! Tummy time is improving! I think that the stronger their neck muscles get, the less they hate being on their tummies. We still can't do it for longer than about 1-2 minutes, but they go for way longer before screaming now.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Umm...none, actually! I do need to call and make an appointment to see my OBGYN about birth control - I'm planning to go with an IUD (Mirena, since the copper one isn't covered by public health insurance here and thus is $$$), so I'd appreciate hearing opinions if anyone has tried it!

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Stopping breastfeeding. Enough said. Sad

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH? Ben and I discussed this before the boys were born, and I left the ultimate decision up to him - he can relate more than I can, and he'll be in charge of teaching them hygiene, etc. He initially decided he'd like to have it done, but it wasn't something we could get done in the hospital before discharge; no public hospitals in my state do it (you have to make an appointment with a private surgeon), and the only doctor in our area who does it will only do it until three weeks of age. We never got around to making an appointment within the time frame, so we didn't end up getting it done, and I don't regret that. That said, I don't think I'd necessarily have regretted having them circumcised either (as a side note, it's less common here than in the USA - the official number is about 10% of babies get it done, but honestly I think it's probably closer to 20-25% simply based on the people I know who have had male children recently, who have all had it done).

As to my opinion about circumcision, I think I'd sum it up as: unnecessary, but not evil. It always kind of annoys me when people compare it to female circumcision, which is like comparing a nipple piercing to having your entire boob ripped off - male circumcision doesn't make sex unbearably painful, nor does it have a history of gender suppression. Is it unnecessary? Yes. Is it really comparable to female genital mutilation? No.

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again? Ha! Funny you should ask, because the question I've been getting from EVERYONE lately is, "So when will you have another?" The answer is never. Ever. We only wanted two children, and that's what we have so we're not TTCing again. It annoys me because when I say this, people either smirk and say, "Oh you'll change your mind" (Oh no I won't!) or ask "But don't you want to try for a girl?" (Seriously? We should have an unwanted third child just because we have two boys?) So I guess that was a long way of saying: just two, and never. Stick out tongue

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.) What's your one totally-unnecessary-but-OMG-I-love-it baby item? How do you respond (if at all) to pregnancy/baby advice that is unwanted or just downright bad?

Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite? N/A, sorry. Smile

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

    2 months

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

Having lots of fun taking him around town.  After so many weeks cooped up at home, I can't get enough of being out!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

    This week for immunizations. Sad

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

He's on a nice "schedule", but gets pretty fussy when it's bedtime around 6 pm.  Seems to happen every day now, which is unusual for our normally happy, chill baby.

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?

Not medically necessary and becoming less common in the US.  I taught preschool in Berkeley, CA and most boys were not circumcised, though that area is particularly progressive.   Here in Hawaii, it's still the norm to do it, but we did not.  We discussed our decision extensively and although we felt confident that it was not our first choice, we did feel social pressure to conform (DH mentioned "locker room" stigma).  In the end, we went with our gut and feel good about it.  There was really no convincing reason for us to do it (e.g., cultural tradition).  It was also a decision fully supported by 2 of our doctors -- the pediatric urologist was even quite happy once he realized we were not inclined to choose it.

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?

Maybe 3.  I'm hoping to wait till A is at least 1.5 years old before TTC, but only time will tell.

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)

For the mamas: "Dates" with DH -- Do you do them? How often? What do you do and is baby included?

Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite?

    Not there yet....

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 2 years, 8 months, 2 weeks (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Nothing new this week. (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Next week DD and I have to get our initial screening to get medically cleared to go to Hawaii with DH... yay! (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?  Sharing, DD loves her cousin, but sometimes forgets to share her toys with her. (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH? I only plan on having girls, so this is a decision I don't have to worry about.  Wink
    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again? I think I am done having children, but would like to adopt one at some point.  Right now I am happy with just DD, so this will not be for a while.
    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins? (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.) Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite?  For me this was a very difficult experience.  She started biting and did not stop, so I had to wean her around 8 months.
TTCers:  Which cycle are you on?  Where in the cycle are you?  What, if anything, are you doing/trying for TTC success?
  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? I am 33 weeks, 2 days pregnant.

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?  I'm feeling pretty good now that I'm done with work....yay!!!  My next day of work will be October 18th, when he is about 12 weeks old.

Another milestone is that I saw him move this week, as opposed to only feeling it.  It was pretty cool to see my belly quiver with his hiccups (which he gets almost every day now), and a couple of times I could see some sort of limb roll across my belly.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  Appt. on Monday next week, just routine.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?  I was very emotional this past weekend.  I had 5 houseguests for a girls weekend and my last baby shower.  It was totally a blast, but completely exhausting.  Saturday was such a long day for me that I broke down and cried twice in front of my family from sheer exhaustion.  Luckily, my little breakdowns were very brief (I was better within 5 minutes).

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?  It wasn't even much of conversation for us, we are definitely having it done.  First of all MH is Jewish, and I think his parents would have a coronary if we didn't (one of his cousins chose not to for their child, and the family still talks about it).  In fact, it's already a controversy that we're planning to have it done at the hospital, rather than at home with a rabbi!  Normally we're not ones to bow down to family pressures, but there was another reason, too.

Besides that, my grandfather was not circumcised at birth, but then needed to have it done when he was about 65 years old due to an infection.  He said it was one of the most painful things he'd ever had to endure.  Now, I realize that argument that it's also painful for babies, but from research I understand that its far, far more physically painful and emotional if you need to have it done as an adult.  I also realize that my grandfather's situation is probably rare, but I feel more comfortable doing it than not dong it.

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again? I've always wanted three, and MH wants two.  I'm starting to lean towards his two, though!  I feel like we'd need a bigger house if we ever had three, and I don't really want to move for a very long time, if ever!

No plans for when to TTC for a second, though.  I think probably when this one is about 2 years old might be a good time to start trying, but we'll see what feels right when that time comes.

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)  Did you/are you planning to bank or donate your cord blood?  What was the main reason for your decision?

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

19 weeks and 1 day old (just over 4 months old)

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

Libby is making huge strides daily...she can roll front to back and back to front and is learning to tri pod sit. She also is pushing up onto her knees during tummy time.  Her hand coordination is getting really good and she can grab her toys with ease and control now.  She also has noticed the dogs and reaches out to touch them.  I am starting to look for a high chair so she can get used to sitting in before we begin to introduce solids later this summer.  Oh! And she's been using the potty...with elimination communication.  I haven't changed a poopy diaper in 3 days!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

Libby's 4 months appt. is next Tuesday...she'll be 4.5 months but it's because we delayed some of her vax at birth.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

I come home for lunch and nurse Libby.  She's decided she's too busy to nurse now and latches on for maybe 5 minutes and then is done.  It's frustrating to battle traffic, etc. and spend 30 minutes of my lunch hour in the car just so she can nurse for 5 minutes!  But at least I get to play with her in the middle of the day.

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?

Before we knew we were having a daughter we discussed it and decided that if we were to have a son we would no circumcise.  J felt very strongly about this (and he is circumcised) and I agreed.  If/when our son wanted to do something different, it would be his choice and his body.  Plus, there is NO need to do it...and it's essentially genital mutilation in the same way that female circumcision is...

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?

We'd like 2 children and will try to TTC#2 this time next year.  Hopefully I won't need to wean Libby to get PG, but we shall see.

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)

Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite?

I dunno...Libby doesn't have teeth yet.  But my friends say that if they bite you pull them off immediately and tell them "no biting, it hurts mama." and then try nursing later.  Generally, a baby will bite when their bored so it's best to finish nursing once you see them becoming bored or distracted at the breast.  We shall see...

TTCers:  Which cycle are you on?  Where in the cycle are you?  What, if anything, are you doing/trying for TTC success?

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?  26 weeks pg

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? feeling good...amazed at how big this belly of mine is getting!  It is really getting hot down here which is always miserable, but being 6 months pg is not helping!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  next tuesday for the glucose test.  I thought my 20 week u/s would be my last, but since the baby was already registering a week bigger at the 20 week u/s, dr wants to do another one when we get closer to see just how big of a baby we are working with (like dr said...we are hoping for basketball player (long & lean) not a football player (wide)!

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?  keeping cool!

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?  If we have a boy, we are planning on getting it done.  I was for it, but ultimately left the decision up to DH & he wanted it.

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?  I used to think 3, but now I am leaning towards 2.  I don't want to stretch us too thin, but I was an only child & would like this baby to have a sibling.  Funny this is a question b/c just this morning on my way to work I was thinking about when we would start TTC again.  I REALLY don't want to be pg in the summer again, so maybe around this baby's first birthday would be a good time to start...a nice spring or really early summer baby would be great!

    (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

she'll be 7 months old in 5 days!!! wow!

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

we're continuing on our adventure with solids...she grimaced on day 1 with squash that i cooked for her...on day 2 she gagged and then vomited...on day 3 i tried again (with smaller amounts diluted in breastmilk) and she still gagged and threw up! so, i gave up on squash and started on carrots...and she loves them!! :) it's so fun b/c she will grab the spoon and try to self feed too :)

she is mastering the crawl and i even found out that she can crawl in her sleep sack!! i've read that some babies can even pull themselves up to standing in the crib while in a sleep sack!! she is a long ways away from that but it'll be so cute to see her trying to do that....  although she has started to grab at the rails so i am not sure how long before she tries to pull up from them

not a real milestone but another cute thing she did this week.... often i'll put her in the crib when she is sleepy and wait for her to fall asleep... i'll sit at the foot of the crib (out of sight) just in case she poops...well, this week i was sitting on the floor when all of a sudden i look up and see two big brown eyes staring down at me!! she was pulling the bumper down with her hands to peer down at me LOL so adorable.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

    not until 9 months

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

figuring out if the gagging was normal for all babies when they taste something that isn't breastmilk flavored....or if she just didn't like squash! she was started to not even want rice cereal b/c she was worried i'd feed her a spoonful of squash! good to know that she is open to trying other things :)

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?

we have a girl so we didn't have to decide but if we had a boy we would not have gotten it done.  i didn't have strong feelings about it but MH is strongly against it and feels it is purely cosmetic and not medical.  he feels that a boy can be shown proper hygiene and infections are really rare if that is the case.

i've read posts about this on other boards and a lot of men want it done "so he can look like me" but when most men are questioned about whether or not their father is circumcised, most don't even know...so that doesn't seem like a relevant point

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?

not sure if we are done or if we'll have one more.  if we have another, we still haven't decided what the ideal age separation will be. not more than 4-5 years apart for sure. but not sure how close together, either.

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)

Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite?

don't know yet! i have heard about the 3 strikes rule though...give them a firm no, pull off, and then try again. if they do it again 2 more times then take the boob away for the time being so they learn that they lose meal time privileges if they bite :)

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 20w2d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Still feeling good. The other day I was thinking how I completely feel "normal". My energy is back and my appetite seems to have gone back to normal.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Next routine check up is on the 24th. HOpefully, we'll order the crib next weekend. I also need to look into classes that we need to take.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? I woke up yesterday with skin bumps on my upper thighs! (just a small patch though). I freaked out and contacted my sister who is a dermatologist. The bumps are not itchy though. I checked and it's not PUPPS! Whew! My sister said it doesn't sound like it's dangerous or anything I may have used something that irrirated my skin. I am observing if it will go away in a few days.

    (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?

Good thing we don't have to worry about this now. If ever we do have a boy, I'll discuss with DH and have him make the decision. I think he's more inclined to having it done though.

    (6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?

Ideally, 3 but 2 at the least. However,I want to see how the 1st one goes before thinking about the 2nd one Stick out tongue. DH does wanna try for a boy though!!

    (7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?  (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)

Hmmm... I had not heard this but it sounds right.

Both times Alexa bit me was at the end of the nursing session when she kept wanting more but was latching on and off and wanting to play and nurse at the same time.

So tonight, when I knew she had nursed enough and I saw her start to get fidgety, I ended the nursing before she had a chance to try her teeth on me again. Yay!

Not necessary. But this is a non-issue for us. We would get it done because DH is Jewish. So it would be done at a Briss.(6) How many children would you like to have?  When will you TTC again?
2-3, but we will probably just have two. We will TCC again after Alexa turns 1 and I run a marathon. :-)(7) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins? (I've added all your questions from last week to my list.)Mamas: Is BFing babies with teeth difficult?  How do you encourage LO not to bite?Still figuring this out. (5) What is your opinion about circumcision?  Will/Did you get it done or not?  Who made the ultimate decision?  You or YH?  As of right now, we plan to have it done.  MH feels very strongly about it.
