Lifting 15 month-old while pregnant

Hi ladies,

Sorry - I think this has been asked several times before but I couldn't find the posts.

I've heard that it is unsafe to lift your toddler while pregnant. I'm 19 weeks now and I still lift my LO...it's hard not to...especially when DH is not around.

What do you all do?

TIA!!

  • I was lifting my 18 month old until the day before I had DD. Just listen to your body.

  • It's fine, unless your OB has told you otherwise.  I lifted DS up until I had my c/s.

  • I have a non walking 17 mo old and have been lifting/carrying her all day.  I do have sciatica so I do try to take it easy when it's acting up but so far so good.  Your body will let you know if you overdid it.
  • I lifted DS the entire pregnancy up until the day I delivered.  I was tired at the end of the day but my doctor said it was fine.

  • ditto above pps.  i lifted DD (who was 16.5 mos when i delivered DS) the whole time while pg.  no problems.
  • DS1 was 16 months when he started walking (i was 35wks pg) and he was 30 pounds.  i didn't have a choice.  my doctor never cautioned against it and i never had any probs.  is there a reason you are being told not to life your LO?

  • I'm still lifting my 20 month old.   I actually find it easier with the bump to carry him since I can sort of rest some of the weight on my belly!

  • My first 2 were 16 months apart, and I carried #1 until I had baby.

#2 is mow 20 months, and I'm 7.5 months pg.  I still pick up both of them, 3yo and 20mo.

Unless your Dr specifically tells you not to, you should be fine.

  • I had a 15-24month old while pg and never felt that lifting her was a strain, I guess because I was used to it? That said, I did get tired sometimes (nothing to do with her weight though) and I would feign a hurting back or something and kneel down to hug her instead of picking her up or ask her to hold my hand and "show mommy how you walk like a big girl!" :) The second part works well if you have a walker of course!

  • I lift DS - he's 17 months.  I have no choice, I have to take care of him.
