1st Trimester

Doctors visit was kind of a bust

I went in today for my severe morning sickness (right now all I can get down about 3oz of ice cubes and one small meal a day) this is the 2nd time I've been in. She (the nurse Prac. that I have to see) won't give me anything stronger than the zofran. She said I was boarderline dehydrated so she sent me to the ER for an IV fluids.

The ER wanted me to wait 3 hours because my case wasn't urgent and I kept getting bump by other people. Went back to the doctor she said it's fine if I skip the IV if I promise to try to get down at least one-two glasses of ice or water over the course of the night.

I'm down another 3lbs making it a total of 9lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight, I was small to begin with so she said she's actually more worried about that. Told me to eat all high calorie food, which is frustrating since I can't eat anything let alone something high in calories.

All in all I know she was trying to help but I wish they'd let me see my OB. I spent 3 hours at the OB and ER today to basically get no relief. I'm still just as sick as I was when I went in and I still throw up the water I'm trying to drink, even with the zofran.

Not really sure why I just typed all this out, I guess it theraputic to write it out to people who would understand.

  • When I was pregnant with DD, I was prescribed Zofran after losing 10 pounds between appointments. But the Zofran was too strong for me and made me more nauseous. Instead of looking for something stronger, maybe you should try cutting the pill in half and see if that helps. Also, I drank Coke. I know, I know... Caffeine is "bad", but when all you are doing is throwing up anything helps. If you get a regular Coke and let it go a little flat and sip on it, it helps tremendously. That is the only way I got through my first 20 weeks last time!

I hope everything gets better for you!

The nurse actually suggest the coke thing, I hadn't heard of that. I'm so gonna try it. Thanks!

  • I hope you start to feel better, that must be miserable!
  • Oh, honey, I'm so sorry! That sounds absolutely awful! It also sounds like your nurse is kind of a beeyotch who doesn't pay attention well.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • The coke thing works REALLY well for me (when I get nervous I get nauseous - which happened a LOT in college, when I was interviewing for a job, when I met my husband, etc etc etc).  I haven't had too much MS yet (an icky stomach every so often) knock on wood - but if I do I'm trying flat coke first thing!

you could also try gatorade. i do coke or gatorade and it seems to do better on my stomach than just plain water. i drink water later in the day if my stomach is behaving. sorry you're so sick. :(

Gatorade is my go-to in the morning when I just can't choke down water.

Don't guilt yourself too bad on the Coke for every 12 ounces, there's only 35mg of caffeine and most studies say you can have up to 200mg a day.

(if you're wondering about caffeine counts, go here.)

  • I really think you need to get to the ER and get some IV fluids.... she sent you there for a reason and it sounds like you aren't getting your fluids you promised to get down. Dehydration is could be pretty serious.
