Slightly detached placenta? - happy endings please

After a weekend of recurrent pains in my lower right side, and some dark brown spotting this morning (not alot, just noticeable when I wipe), I went in to see my OB today.

He did a physical exam and did see that there was definitely some bleeding, but not alot. Then on the ultrasound he was not sure, but he said it looked like the very edge of my placenta was slightly detached from the uterus wall. He said it's on the same side that I was complaining of the pain, so it made sense that's what it was, but he still wasnt convinced it was actually detached.

(*note - I also just had a CVS 10 days ago, so I am wondering if the lifting corner is the same edge that the CVS sample was taken from. maybe the procedure damaged that corner and it started pulling away??)

The part that was pulled away was small in comparison to the rest of my placenta, (for example, if my placenta was a sheet of 8.5x11 paper, the piece that was lifted was like 1 small corner). But still, it's scary!  I am still having the occasional pain in my side and every time I feel it, I can just imagine the placenta pulling further away Sad

He didnt seem overly concerned, he just told me just to abstain from sex and exercise and come back to see him next week. I asked him if I should stop picking up my 2 year old daughter for a while and he said it's not necessary.

Of course I came home and googled it and I've terrified myself and I am hopeful that because it's such a small detachment, it wont cause any serious problems but I have put myself on modified bed-rest and am only lifting DD when DH is not home.

I have read that as long as it's not a big tear or detachment, there's a good chance it will resolve itself, but I am still so worried. Add to all this, that I have a blood clotting disorder (MTHFR) and so I am on daily baby aspirin and maybe going on Lovenox (blood thinner) so I am not sure how that affects placental detachment.

Any similar stories out there that turned out ok? Any suggestions or words of advice would be appreciated too.

Thanks ladies!

Margo

  • I posted on the MTHFR post below. I believe the risk of MTHFR is that your placenta clots from the uterus, can come off and cause a loss. I am sorry if this is hard but you are asking.... that is why they put us on blood thinners. My cousin has had two beautiful healthy children while on baby aspirin and lovenox/heparin. Without it, she had 2 first trimester losses, one at 20 weeks, and one child with profound special needs. We are homozygous MTHFR C667T though I am not sure if that is what you have. Best of luck!

  • We found a small area at the top of my placenta was detached at 12 weeks, it completely resolved its self. I am also on baby aspirin and Lovenox for MTHFR. So far I have had no more issues with detachment. I was still under my RE when the detachment was found, I was told to rest and take it very easy and not to be on my feet if it could be avoided. I was also having heavy red bleeding tho, not just brown spotting.

  • This happened to me at 17 weeks.  But they told me complete bed rest for one week, lots of water and no lifting! Hopefully  it will re-attached which mine did but till now I need to wear panty liners b/c I have slight brown spotting.  But I would totally do no lifting! It was hard to only be allowed to go to the restroom and grab a quick snack but it is totally worth it.

  • Mine happened two weeks ago. The tear was a little larger then what you are saying, and caused a lot of bleeding. There is about 9ccs of blood around the amniotic sack, and I am still bleeding and spotting.

I have been put on lifting restrictions (lift nothing heavier then 5 lbs), and modified bed rest (try not to be on my feet for more then an hour a day). It is really hard not to lift DS because he doesn't understand, but we are adjusting. And, of course, no sex or orgasms.

My high risk OB- I also have a congenital heart defect- says that I have one of the largest bleeds he has ever seen with a living baby. (I am not sure if that is supposed to be reassuring?!?) But he says that issues with the placenta in the first/early second tri almost always resolve themselves and that I should try not to worry too much. Ha!

I now have to go back every two weeks for an u/s to check the size of the bleed and the status of the tear, on top of my regular OB appointments. (Help! I am being doctored to death! lol)

My only advice is to take it easy and try to not think about it too much, or it can make you crazy.

With DD1, my placenta detached from the area covering my cervix (I had placenta previa in the early part of my pregnancy) causing a big red bleed.  It resolved and she was born healthy.  I have one copy of the A1298C  mutation and was on baby aspirin at the time but not on Lovenox.  I am on Lovenox for this pregnancy until 36 weeks.

It is very likely that all will be fine in your case.  Take it easy and hang in there.
