Tons of Questions

I asked Renee about this one today, but, what are your PG book recommendations?  R and I talked about WTEWYE and the Mayo Book.  Is there anything else you think should be read this early in pregnancy?  Any websites I should bookmark?

I see a trainer to do weekly weight training.  Is that okay to do this early?  (If so, I will tell her and I know she'll adjust the weight for me and such.)  And regular exercise (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike) is okay, right?

What are the drugs I can and can't take?  Of course, the morning I find out I'm PG, I get a head cold as well.  I'm trying to stick it out, but, just in case things get worse....

Am I right in thinking first tri ends at 13 weeks 3 days?

ETA:  Is it too early for a baby book?

Sorry girls, I don't even get to see the doctor until July 19th (I'm thinking I'm going to try and get that changed though).  So, I'm full of questions.

  • I asked Renee about this one today, but, what are your PG book recommendations?  Just for fun- I loved the book Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy....You will love it!!  Is there anything else you think should be read this early in pregnancy?  Any websites I should bookmark? Babycenter is a great website to bookmark.... I see a trainer to do weekly weight training.  Is that okay to do this early?  (If so, I will tell her and I know she'll adjust the weight for me and such.)  And regular exercise (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike) is okay, right? From what my Dr said, you can resume any exercises you did before you got pregnant, but do not start anything new..... What are the drugs I can and can't take?  I only took Tylenol, but I know there are other things you can take. My Dr gave me a list at my first appt with her. Am I right in thinking first tri ends at 13 weeks 3 days? I always thought it was 12 weeks..... HTH :)

  • You'll have to modify your weight training a little because you can't lift above your head during PG and they will change it so you aren't flat on your back (but I think that's later and not a big deal in 1st tri).  The other exercise should be fine.

I think you'll probably have to suffer through the cold.  I remember I got one early and they didn't want me to take anything in the 1st tri, but after the 1st tri was over the doc okayed Sudafed.  Get a neti pot if you don't already have one, or you can use the saline nose spray, but that's all they let me have.  Tylenol is okay to take.  I really tried not to take any meds during the 1st tri (which you are right about the dates) just because I think that was the most dangerous time to take medicines.  I think the only meds that I have taken the whole PG were tylenol, prilosec, and tums.  By the time it was okay for me to take decongestants I didn't need them anymore.

I have a bunch of PG books but WTE has been the most helpful and is pretty much the only one I ever pick up anymore.

  • you should be fine continuing any exercise that you're used to.  definitely talk to your trainer and let her know.  there will be some things that will be off limits (like ab work), if not now then soon.

you can't take advil.  you can take tylenol.  if there is a specific drug you are thinking of, try googling it and pregnancy.

I think you're right on when 1st tri ends.  I had WTE, also get some books on the baby's first year and what to expect when the baby comes (I have WTE the 1st year)  Try to read some of it during your pregnancy b/c you won't have much time after!  Also, Baby 411 is a really great reference book.  It's by the same people that wrote Baby Bargains, which I also really loved.

  • my friend recommended Your Pregnancy Week by Week.. so far I like it.  Babycenter.com is also a great resource.

My DR said to keep my heart rate under 140, but I was ok to do anything I was already doing.  I did have to stop spinning though, since my HR goes way above 140.

  • I have ZERO answers but I just wanted to tell you congrats!  I missed your posts this weekend and earlier today.

     I'm happy to hear such great news =)  Wishing you a H & H 9 months, love!

  • Books - I liked the Mayo clinic book best. Also, baby bargains, the nursing mothers companion, happiest baby on the block (get the DVD), and baby 411. The belly book is good if you want to journal your pregnancy.

As for exercise, you can continue but do try to keep your HR below 140. Definitely let your trainer know but I'm pretty sure the thing about lifting over your head is an OWT. I am so excited for you!

  • Katy, again, I have to say I am so excited for you!  Here is a good site to use as a reference for taking medication while pregnant/breastfeeding.

I think all the other girls covered everything else.  Big Smile

  • What are your PG book recommendations?

I definitely liked the Mayo book as well.  I would also recommend the Dr. Oz book, It's You: Having a Baby.  It's has info for TTC, pregnancy, and baby, so it's definitely not too early to read it. As far as websites to bookmark, I don't have any, but my recommendation is to STAY OFF of the 1st tri board.  You will cause yourself lots of unnecessary worry.  Seriously. Stay. Off.

I see a trainer to do weekly weight training.  Is that okay to do this early?  (If so, I will tell her and I know she'll adjust the weight for me and such.)  And regular exercise (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike) is okay, right?

DEFINITELY let her know you are pregnant so she can adjust your weight.  It's not as big of an issue right now since you don't have to worry about uterine rupture, etc. until you really start growing, but she should know.  I have been working out through my whole pregnancy so far (including weight lifting), and I think it is the biggest  reason that I feel so good.  I don't run at all, but I use the treadmill for walking, elliptical, and the bike (just stay away from intense cardio like spin classes).  They will tell you to keep your heart rate under 140.  I already wear a heart rate monitor when I work out, so it was easy for me to track that, but it's really not necessary.  The reason they want your HR under 140 is because you have to make sure that there is always sufficient oxygen for baby.  So, the main thing to monitor is your breathing, not your HR.  140 is the point that most healthy people can get up to w/o reducing their oxygen too much, but it's really an arbitrary number.  You should be able to have a conversation while working out.  If you're huffing and puffing, you're pushing it too hard.  When I first got pregnant, I would barely get winded when my HR reached 140, and now I rarely get over 130 b/c that's when I notice my breathing get more difficult.  So, you just have to listen to your body.

There is concern with getting overheated while working out.  Your body can regulate temperature, but baby's can't.  So, its important not to get overheated.  With that said, there is really no way to monitor your temp while you're working out, so you really just have to pay attention.  Notice how much you're sweating, drink cold water, and let your perspiration dry on your skin rather than wiping it off.  All of those things will help you to stay cool.

You can definitely work out safely during pregnancy (as long as you are having a healthy pregnancy), and it's supposed to help with an easier L&D as well. :)  Just listen to your body and take it down a notch. If you can't tell, I did a LOT of research & asked a LOT of questions about this when I got pregnant, b/c I wanted to continue through pregnancy, but was obviously concerned about LO.

What are the drugs I can and can't take?  I would ask your personal OB their opinion on anything you feel you might need.

Am I right in thinking first tri ends at 13 weeks 3 days?  Yep!

ETA:  Is it too early for a baby book?  It's never too early.  Enjoy it and be optimistic.  That's how I feel about it!

Sorry girls, I don't even get to see the doctor until July 19th (I'm thinking I'm going to try and get that changed though).  So, I'm full of questions.

We've all been full of questions.  Ask away! :)

Definitely let your trainer know but I'm pretty sure the thing about lifting over your head is an OWT.

That's what both of my OBs said--lifting overhead is fine.

  • I was NOT a fan of WTEWYE. I really liked Your Pregnancy Week by Week, because I'm impatient and love reading weekly rather than monthly. I spent a lot of time on www.babycenter.com too, lots of good weekly updates there.

My OB said that I could continue with most exercise if I was already doing it before. Just don't start anything new. I feel like there was something about lifting above your head too? I could be making that up...Personally, I'd keep the weights very low. I'm a wimp like that.

I'm super weird about medicine. I didn't take anything unless I felt like I was dying. I got VERY sick in my 1st trimester and I had to call my OB to find out what I could take. It didn't help much :(

I think it's a good idea to get a baby book now! A lot of them have stuff that ask about how you felt when you found out, etc. Good to write it down now when it's still fresh :)

  • The girls pretty much answered everything. I have a couple things to add. As for medicine, they are categorized by letters on how safe they are during pregnancy. You can easily find those on the internet. I was like Ashley with meds. Only took them if it was absolutely necessary. I suffered through TERRIBLE gall bladder attacks and refused to take meds for it because I'm weird like that. As for the baby book, GO FOR IT! You have waited long enough and you are finally PG!!!! There's no need to wait any longer!!Enjoy writing in it!!

  • the other girls pretty much covered everything.  The only thing my doctor told me not to resume was the jogging...not sure why, during my pregnancy.
  • The girls pretty much answered everything but I did want to chime in about meds.  Even though you aren't going into your Dr yet, go ahead and call them and ask what medications you can take for what your symptoms are.  I have a LONG list of things I can take on my fridge so that helps me a lot.

And I have to state that I agree with Dani 110%.  Stay away from the 1st trimester board!  They will end up scaring the crap out of you and they aren't nice to begin with.

  • Another good book to consider is "Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy".  It is a much lighter and less scientific read than WTE, which I am also reading, but it's a good read nonetheless.

Also, in terms of meds - if you do not want to call your Dr for any reason to ask about what meds you can take - your local pharmacist can also answer these questions.  In fact, before I had an OB, I called my PCP and they told me the pharmacist would have more accurate info on drugs/pregnancy than they do.  If in doubt, I would not take anything until getting the okay to do so.

    I told her that too!!!
