  I called Aflac to look into a disability policy that would cover maternity leave, and the representative I talked to said they only offer that type of policy to customers who are purchasing through their employer. He said I couldn't buy it as a stand-alone policy. It would be worth calling since these things can change.

  A friend had it through an employer and used it. She found it useful. I don't remember any other details.

  I just had short term disability both times. Depending on how far ahead you're planning, you can save cold hard cash.

  My dad has sold it for 20 years and I dont think that what they told you was correct.  you can purchase a stand alone short term disability policy from them, you just obviously have to pay out of pocket for it.

  I have heard (but don't know for certain) that for STD plans, you need to carry your STD coverage for a year before you get pregnant in order to qualify for the post-natal benefit.
