Anti-anxiety or depression meds and milk supply?

My OB and I have discussed starting me on Lexapro immediately following birth bc I really struggled last time (and didn't really seek help) and I'm already experiencing lots of anxiety. I was relieved to have a proactive plan this time...but I've read in the past few days that these meds can delay milk coming in by several more days. What has been your experience? I EBF'd DS and due to a strong family history of food allergies EBFing is extremely important to me. I will be talking to OB on Thursday, just trying to look for personal exeriences. Thanks!

  • I started zoloft 2 weeks after DD was born and it didn't affect my supply at all.

  • I took a low dosage of Celexa all through pregnancy and as soon as I gave birth doubled the dosage, it's still a lower dosage than I took pre-pregnancy, although my pre-PG dosage was on the higher side.

My milk started to come in 48-72 hours after I gave birth, just as expected, and I haven't had any supply problems so far (LO is gaining weight well, etc). I've never heard of the milk supply issues, actually. My nursing guide (The Nursing Mother's Companion) has a section on drugs/BFing interaction and doesn't mention it FWIW.

  • Starting the Lexapro the day your baby is born or a few days after your milk comes in is not going to make that much of a difference because it has to build up to therapuetic levels anyway.  I started Celexa after my DD was born and I waited until my milk came in, which was about four days and I haven't had any problems with supply and EBF.
