Day Care--what's the big secret?

i've been doing some early research in the cost of day care facilities around me; the learning experience, primetime, and other franchises.  so many websites bc they are run from national headquarters have little to no information on tuition costs, curriculum, meals, etc.  what's the big secret?

who did you go with, or interview with, and what average prices here in NJ were you quoted/what was included?  thanks for any info!

  • they dont give you prices because they want you to go there. just make appointments a tour takes about 10 min and they will give you pricing

  • call them - most will give prices over the phone.

chains can't give prices b/c they are not the same at every location.... and things change all the time so they don't want to have the wrong thing on their website... AND they want you to come visit - or at least talk to someone on the phone.

for an infant expect approx 1K-1500/month.

  • i guess that makes sense, heck they're not running these places for the pure joy of it.
  • I put my first born in The Learning Experience at 3yrs old.  They were great!  Highly recommended.  I do understand taht they are atleast 1K for infants and as they get older the price goes down.  By the time my son left for Kindergarten, we were paying $750 a month.
  • i work in a daycare im 7 weeks pregnant and in our policy u cant give prices over the phone!!! but i will be staying home wit my baby i do not trust daycare pretty sad because i work at one!!!!!
  • Yeah, I noticed that too when I was looking. Ditto PPs who say that most will give you rates if you call, but it weirded me out too.

For reference, I pay $192/wk for 3-days a week care with an in-home daycare provider around Princeton. I think her full time rates are around $300? She is absolutely wonderful & I know she's got two openings (infant & up) starting this summer. I'll give a great reference to anyone interested! :)

I found her through Monday Morning Moms. I called them when my daughter was 1 month old. They took me out, we visited three home providers, and I picked the one I liked best. I liked them because I had to go back to work at 8 weeks pp, and I just didn't trust a center with my baby at that point. Plus Monday Morning takes care of all the safety stuff (criminal background check, safety inspection of the home, gathers references, does random inspections of all providers), so that was one less thing for me to worry about.
