Hurricanes

So I just moved to SE Texas 2 months ago. Last night I was having dinner with my brother and we talked about evacuation plans. And he was saying how you need to empty your fridge and freezers before you evacuate. I suddenly had a panic attack because I have over 500oz of frozen BM, since my daughter won't latch I EP. Is there anything I can do in advance to be prepared to take it with me or should I just be prepared to have to dump it =(  ?? TIA for any help.

Re: Hurricanes

  • don't dump! Best case scenario have lots of frozen ice packs and an ice chest on hand, and evacuate inland to stay with someone who has a working freezer!

I agree, dont worry about dumping.  Go ahead and save some coke bottles with water frozen so that if you need to transport you can.  Someone inland will have a freezer working, and if all else fails, someone will have a generator and understand.

  • and in the 9 years I have lived in Houston, I have only evacuated twice. It's slightly more common on the coast but only slightly. Chances are greater than 50% that you won't have to worry about it. But just have a cooler and ice ready.

  • I hear dry ice works really well. That's what one of my neighbors did for Ike.

  • I have lived here for 35 years. There have been 2 bad hurricanes that we lost power for an extended time (1-2 weeks or more). That leaves a lot of years that had no major power outages.

I've lived here for 35 years also and in hurricane Alicia we lost power for 5 days. In hurricane Ike my parents lost power for 14 days but DH and I only lost power for 8 hours. I wouldn't worry.
