I have read somewhere that it is 20%, which seems kind of low to me since we've had 2 and many others have multiples, but I guess that just means that lots of people's work out on the first try!
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Expecting again after IVF
Is that stat on disruption or failed matches? Isn't disruption after finalization? Or am I thinking of dissolution?
I am talking about a failed match, which I always think is the same as disruption, but maybe I am maybe using the word wrong!

disruption in fost/adopt world means that the foster parent decided not to have the child in the home. Have no idea what it means outside of foster care
A disrupted match means before placement and disrupted adoption means that either the birth mom changed her mind within the time frame allowed or the adoptive family did. That stat does seem low, but I think so much of it is about finding a solid agency who gives counseling to birth moms, provides them with support (not just FOR adoption but help parenting if that's the better choice for them), etc. I know our failed match was with a HORRIBLE agency, so I'm sure their failure rate is crazy high. The agency we ended up adopting through, though, had only 2 failed matches out of every 100 they did (on average).

they are ours because we have had the audacity to envision them.
That, at the end of the day...or long sleepless night,
is how love really works."

Disruption - the adoptive family cancels the adoption
Change of Heart - the birthparent changes their mind before placement / signing TPR
Revocation - the birthparent changes their mind between placement / signing TPR and finalization. (the waiting period here is 10 days)
Contestation - the birthparent tries to contest the adoption as being invalid after the adoption is finalizes. They said this has happened a few times but the judge has never overturned the original adoption. Heartbreaking for all involved I would imagine.
Their stats are that a change of heart happens about 20% of the time, while a revocation happens about 5% of the time.

Our facilitator told us that failed matches occur 5% of the time, yet we had two failed matches before our third actually resulted in bringing our dd home. Either their 5% is low, or we have REALLY bad luck!

Thanks MayDay! It sounds so corny but I appreciate everyone on this board so much--super informative and supportive. This is number is a bit disappointing esp if its on the low side like some people think...

Our agency defines it as such:
Disruption - the adoptive family cancels the adoption
Change of Heart - the birthparent changes their mind before placement / signing TPR
Revocation - the birthparent changes their mind between placement / signing TPR and finalization. (the waiting period here is 10 days)
Contestation - the birthparent tries to contest the adoption as being invalid after the adoption is finalizes. They said this has happened a few times but the judge has never overturned the original adoption. Heartbreaking for all involved I would imagine.

Our agency cites 20% change of heart, too.
