Stuff other than clothes? I have yet to buy anything, oddly enough I'm having a hard time trying to find time to do any shopping or the energy during the week.
We started buying after my big u/s. It was more real for me then and I had to shop for stuff to prepare for her arrival. It was hard for me to bond with her considering my history. Buying clothes and baby stuff for her helped me bond with her....

I just bought a few cute outfits, bibs, and pacifiers yesterday after finding out it was a boy this weekend. We probably will start looking at furniture by the end of the month.
Well, clothes and little things I'll start buying on Wednesday when I find out the gender and make sure LO is growing healthy. The nursery furniture/big stuff won't be until V Day. I'm just too scared to do that now.
As soon as I knew he was a boy (around 14wks). I was kinda scared but couldn't help myself. It actually helped me make the pregnancy feel more real and bond with the baby like Cowgril said!

We just brought our first purchases two weeks ago which was the stroller, a hat and some materials on sale to sew the crib skirt. That is it all though and we do not plan to make any more purchase until after the baby showers or close to the arrival when the baby is born (with the exception of infant car seat).
I am learning that I won't really know what I will use until the baby is here. Sometimes, I feel like I jumped too soon on the stroller as I want the baby to be comfortable sitting in it more than the focus to be on me pushing the stroller. Only time will tell if we made the right decision or not despite reading great reviews. Every baby is different.
But, we did do some nursery stuff prior early on. We found an awesome solid wood armoire free on the road side. I had sanded it, painted it and it looks like a new expensive piece. We also received a gently used crib/mattress handed down to us and have already set that up. I also made my own mobile and frame out of scrapbooking paper. It also helped that I been given lots of onesies, burp clothes, blankets and a boppy from my parents already. We are not finding out gender and do not plan to buy outfits until after the baby is born. Onesies will be fine for the first few weeks anyways.
I started buying clothes after we found out he is a he. Other than that we waited awhile. We just ordered the crib last weekend. We also didn't buy anything too big, because we knew we would get stuff at our shower. I bought our bedding on sale at 24ish weeks.
I would wait until after your shower to make any big buys. At our shower we got our travel system, packnplay, highchair, diaper bag (I wanted an expensive one and NEVER thought someone would actually buy it), bouncer, play mat (yet another expensive/thought no one would actually buy it), carrier, and changing table. My parents bought our crib and dresser. With the money we were given we bought a bookshelf, shopping cart cover, diaper genie, and some other moderately priced things.... but that add up.

No shower here. We have a very small circle of friends here and obviously no family....we'll probably have a welcome baby ______ party when I get back, but I don't expect that we'll get much.

In that case, I didn't feel comfortable buying/getting big ticket items until after 24 weeks. Like I said... I just ordered the crib and dresser last weekend. I also had a late loss, so I just didn't feel like this was going to actually happen until I hit 24 weeks.

While I can't speak for you, we are trying to be as frugal as we can and get things as we go along that are either on good discounts sales or buy gently used items for as long as we can. After doing as much as we can, we probably start purchasing new items probably after 30-32 weeks. We got our crib and armoire before we conceived because they were free. I was suprised how much work/research it took for baby purchases so far so I wouldn't wait too long.
Re: When did you start buying for baby?
I still haven't bought anything. Even clothes.
I'm still too scared, I guess.
