AW: Elimination Communication Success!

Libby pee'd in the potty today!  I have been reading about Eliminiation Communication (EC) and found this site to be very helpful:

https://www.diaperfreebaby.org/

We have "naked time" each day (placing her to play diaper-free over a prefold opened onto a waterproof lap pad) and these past few weeks she's gone longer between naps/feeds with a dry diaper.  I've been observing her when she pees to see her signals (poops are more obvious!) and today we caught her first pee in the potty!

We were nursing and she started to squirm so I got her diaper off and place her on the potty, outfitted with a Munchkin potty seat ($3.99 at Target!), I cued her with "pssss" and she tinkled!  Next we want to  try to catch a poop since she's only going 1-2 times daily and usually in the late afternoon/early evening about 20 minutes after feeding.

ETA: She pee'd two more times and pooped once on the potty today! Hooray!  This EC thing almost seems too easy...but it works!

Not brave, more like lazy.  If we can at least catch 50% of her poops that's less poopy diapers to deal with!  LOL!

I don't plan to have her be diaper-free anytime soon (I think SAHPs are more successful with ECing fulltime) but if she potty learns sooner than later that wouldn't make me sad...they say that in countries where babies don't use diapers (like parts of Russia, China, etc.) that babies are using the potty before they are 12 months old!  So...it can be done.  For now, for us, it'll be just whenever we can...no stress or fuss about it.

But knowing Libby, once she figures out that she has an alternative to being in a wet or dirty diaper, I think she'll be wanting to EC as much as possible.  She already lets us know immediately when she's wet and we know before she poops that she's going to do it.

There's several mommies on the AP board that EC and it works very well for them.  Others CD and EC part-time...I think that'll be our MO...just whenever we can we will.

  • OMG, something new to learn every day! I've never even heard of such a thing. That's awesome though!
  • great job!  It must be hard to figure out the pee part - I could do the poops no problem, but I really have no idea about his pee patterns - well except that he likes to do it immediately after getting a clean diaper, hah.

I posted a while ago that I consistantly caught Jack's poos.  That was just for convenience and didn't want to commit to anything long term b/c he would be going to daycare and I didn't want to stress him out (I know you can do it p/t but I don't think that is for us).

It was at first, but I've made an effort to really pay attention, plus she always verbalizes in a certain way right before she pees and DEFINITELY verbalizes after with this little whine.  She hates to be wet!  I've also noticed she gets really squirmy and sort of does a little shiver right before she has to pee.  Right now we're just finding "pottytunities" after naps, before diaper changes (as you've noticed they will wait until then, so I just put her on the potty first and cue and see if she'll tinkle), before bathtime, etc.

Yes, she may end up in daycare after 12 months but hopefully by then she might be able to sign "potty" and let DCPs know she needs to go.  I have no idea...she never ceases to amaze me with what she can learn, so we shall see.  I don't really intend to go diaper-free though...it's more the convenience of not having so many dirty/wet diapers AND I feel she prefers to sit to go, she wants to in her diaper anyway...especially for poop.  In fact she's so obsessed with sitting she does baby crunches anytime we lay her down now...I swear if she could will herself to sit up on her own she would.

  • i'd heard about EC mentioned on diaperswappers before but never really knew what it was until i read that link! that's neat, maybe we'll try it part time. i have no idea about pee cues and i only know she's about to poop b/c i hear her farting LOL

    great job libby!! (and mama!)

  • B had read about EC in a blog post and mentioned it but we haven't done more research.  Perhaps we'll have to revisit the topic.

Maybe we go through less diapers, too, because Kaya doesn't complain when she's wet and we kinda just change her when she gets up for the day and then right before she goes down for each nap.  And when we hear her poop.

  • I don't know if I'm brave enough to try EC, but I'm happy and amazed for you that it seems to be working so well! Party!!!

Thanks. It's not so brave...we're not trying to get her to be diaper-free...in fact she's still in her CDs, but if one of us happens to notice that she looks like she needs to potty, we're taking her to the toilet first.  Or right after naps or before baths, etc.  And since she only poops once a day now and usually around the same time each day, it's super easy to predict that potty time.  I am thrilled to not have to deal with poopy dipes!  Pee is fine and in time, I think we'll get better about noticing her pee cues better.

  • whoa, that's awesome!  definitely saving that link to refer back to later...

I'm not sure if it's a thing?  We started doing it because Elyse loves to be naked.  I also find it helps when she starts to get some diaper rash, the fresh air helps it.
