I feel ridiculous giving my husband birthday and father's day presents when his is the only money coming in. I know it's * OUR* money, but it just feels really weird. Kinda scary, too.
I think I would feel kind of weird about that, too, but hopefully I would adjust.
We do something similar to M.Amy. We both contribute to a household account used to pay mortgage, utilities, insurance, groceries, gas, etc.
We both also maintain our personal checking accounts which keep our fun money. We actually get different amounts, but we have talked about it and it works for us. If we became a single income family, I imagine we would equalize the allowances, but we haven't discussed it because we still have two incomes.
Yeah, me too. I dont work so when I buy him something it's like he is buying it for himself. He never wants anything, so usually I just try to get something meaningful where I don't spend much.

Peppernut - my feelings exactly! Even though I know my salary helped get us where we are and the money we both saved allows me to SAHM, but it's a very unnerving feeling at times. We both still have our own accounts but aren't doing any "allowance" type deal at this time, interesting to ponder though.
I don't know how it's going to be for us now that I quit working. We have our individual accounts and one joint, but I am closing our individual ones and just keeping the joint. It's too much hassle to have 3 open accounts and sometimes the bank charges us a monthly fee if there is no direct deposit (which there won't be in mine anymore). We will see... it will take getting used to and I'm sure I will have to be frugal b/c DH hates to see me spend money. I see some fights coming our way but hopefully we will figure it out. Good thing is, now that I'm not working I'm not spending as much. It's amazing how much you spend when you work and have to spend on lunches, clothes, going shopping during lunch hour, gas, etc. It adds up!

I have never felt funny about not bringing in an income while I am home with OUR kids. My husband & I have only had 1 joint account - I was working up until my 2nd was born & then was laid off.. I was more upset about losing my job... but honestly love being with OUR kids more! Heck I do a lot of things at home to save us time & money - so we can do things as a family on the weekends!
Re: OMG, that's right! I have no income of my own!
How do you separate money? DH and I finally figured out a way that works for both of us:
- Both of our salaries go into one checking account (this was the case when I wasn't working as well).
- This joint checking account is where we pay all of our bills and put money into savings.
- We each have our own personal checking accounts where we get our "weekly allowance."
- Both of us get the same allowance even if the other person makes more money (for the past few years it has been me but previously it has been DH).
- That way we each have our fun money and money for gifts.
It took a while for us to figure it out but this is what finally works for us.I think I would feel kind of weird about that, too, but hopefully I would adjust.
