Pregnancy Induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Anyone been diagnosed with this? I've been waking up at night with one or both of my hands "asleep". At first I thought it was poor circulation, as I am a back sleeper still. But after looking it up on Dr. Google, I guess it's a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be more common in pregnancy.

I have an OB appt. in an hour, so I'm going to ask her then as well.

Re: Pregnancy Induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Ive been diagnosed with pregnany induced BUMP carpel tunnel syndrome, my  hands curl up into little balls by the end of the night because I can not stop bumping.....

  • Mine is carpal tunnel...it is obnoxious.  I wake multiple times.  My OB is fairly certain it will go away.  You can get (and I advise to do so) arm supports to help.

This.. wrists bands help but do not take away all the pain.  I had it horribly bad with my first and by the time I was out of the hospital it was gone and glorious!  lol.  For me it only got worse too.  I would wake up unable to use my hands for the first half hour of the day and cry from the pain.  And they were numb all day long.  It was awful and I hope to avoid it this time around.. we'll see.

  • I had it REALLY bad when I was pg with DS (but not this time around). ?I would wake up in soooo much pain and it was a lot worse at night. ?I got some arm braces at the drug store and they really really helped. ?I wore them every night. ?Unfortunately, it didn't go away until I had DS, but the braces helped a lot.
  • Yes!  I got it really bad and early on.  I had never heard of this and when pain was going up my arms and even into my back, I didn't know what was happening.  Turns out it was Carpal Tunnel.  I wear braces on my wrists at night (so sexy!  ha ha), but ever since I started,  have not had any issues at all.  1 night I forgot to wear them and there was a noticable difference...ouch!  If this is the worst thing that happens to me, I'll take it.

    Good luck!

I had it REALLY bad with DD.  Doctor is pretty sure it will come back with this one because it never fully resolved.  I'll just C/P my last response to this question instead of typing it all again:

"i had it with #1 but it didn't get bad until near the end.  it started around 30 weeks or so and by 36 weeks it was excruciating.  nothing helped.  the wrist braces were worthless.  i had to (attempt) to sleep sitting up with my arms propped on pillows.  no more side sleeping!  the only thing that made it go away (and it never completely went away) was delivery and time.

my new doctor mentioned that he had one patient that had it so bad it was "debilitating" and he advised her to have surgery.  I think if i had that doctor at the time, he would have advised me to have surgery as well.  apparently since it never went away for me, it will probably come back sooner and worse.  i will have to really REALLY explore the benefits/risks of having the surgery while pregnant if it gets like last time.  after surgery i'll be out of commission - but i was the same way with the CT.  i couldn't even slice up my dinner for goodness sakes!

eta:  i see some replies mentioning physical therapy.  i brought this up to my doc and his thoughts on it were that since it's an internal thing that's not brought on by outside stressors, that physical therapy will do minimal good. "

if it gets bad enough - it can be as incapacitating as having the surgery - everyone has it to different degrees

  • I have it really bad now! and I got the wrist support braces and It helped out for me..

Except I had to figure out the wrist braces on my own, cause my doctor is a douche, and all he mentioned to me was I could have surgery if I wanted.. :

So I brushed it off.. and that week It had gotten so bad I couldn't sleep.. and could barely grasp anything.. so I did my own research and found out I could wear wrist braces.. and the difference is amazing!
