If you have had your gallbladder removed...?

What is the recovery time? Are there any restrictions during recovery? We are planning a big camping trip with some friends and all of our kids. We plan on doing some swimming and other activities. I get to pick the date of my surgery, but didn't know how much recovery time I needed to give myself before the trip.

Thanks!

Re: If you have had your gallbladder removed...?

  • I had my gallbladder out on a Tuesday and was back at work teaching the following Monday.  I had it removed laproscopicly and I am a pretty stubborn patient, so I probably would have been better off taking it easy for a couple more days. If I were planning a camping trip I would give myself 2 weeks to get back up to speed. Swimming should be Ok, but double check with your doc about things like lifting.

  • I was back to school (college) and working my PT job in a week. My sister played in a soccer game in a week (that I thought was a little too much though).

I would probably ask your doctor about camping/swimming though. I can't remember if there were restrictions on getting the stitches wet. I also remember something about not lifting anything too heavy.

  • I had a terrible recovery... I laid in bed for at least 4 days uncomfortable, couldn't sleep, still gassy (from the air they fill you up with)...  I was just miserable.

Otherwise I dont remember any specific restrictions besides no heavy lifting until the followup 2 weeks later (this included no lifting DD, which sucked, and she didn't even weigh much at the time.)

  • It took me about a week to get back to feeling like myself, though I was back to work 3 days after. There are some restrictions on how much weight you can lift right away, there aren't too many restrictions. You will def be sore right after though.

I had it done with a lap procedure so there was about inch incision in my belly button and then 3 other small ones. I think I took the steristrips off about a week later, but the belly button didn't have anything except glue holding it together (made me nervous when I figured that out 24 hours later). So I would keep that in mind with swimming.

  • So, if I got it done say Aug 2nd, I would be feeling OK by the 21st?
I am going to give the doctors office a call about the swimming thing. We are just trying to get a date picked today for our trip.

    Thanks ladies.

  • I think that would be plenty of time to recover, and if you are having a lap your incisions should be healed enough to swim.

This for me. I was a month PP though. Recovery kind of sucked.

Thanks. I actually just called to ask them a few questions about recovery, and they went ahead an penciled me in for surgery on July 28th. Gosh, I am not looking fw to this. The only srugery I have ever had was my c/s with DD, which was a scary mess and I had to be put under. Bc of that, I am having a repeat c/s on the 30th of this month...then 4 wks later removing my gallbladder. What a summer Tongue Tied

Thanks for all of the input ladies!!

  • it depends on how you heal.  I was on lifting restriction for 1 month ( DD was 2 mo old) and no driving for 2 weeks.  I'm pretty sure they won't want you swimming for a couple of weeks but bring it up to MD.  I felt pretty good after a week
