Baby Names

Maggie, Molly or Keely?

Just wanted to get some opinions on possible names for a baby girl.  We're going with a middle name of Ann.

What do people think of Maggie, Molly or Keely?

Re: Maggie, Molly or Keely?

  • I like Molly the best, Maggie is also kind of cute.  Keely is NMS at all.

  • Are the actual names Margaret, Mary and Keely? If so, I like Mary (nn. Molly) the best. I'm not a fan of Keely at all.

I don't think Maggie and Molly are formal enough to be stand alone names, you should give your daughter the option of having something more formal to use when it's not appropriate to be using her nickname.

I don't agree with this. I think Maggie and Molly are nice and can stand alone. I can't think of any situations in which they sound "inappropriate." Now if the nickname were "Scooter" or "Skippy," then I think a more formal option would be necessary.

Keely is NMS. It makes me think of "keel over."

This. I think Maggie and Molly are cute for little girls but can't imagine a professional woman being taken seriously with a cutesy name like that.

  • I love Molly, so that would get my vote. I really like Maggie too.

    Keely is nms at all.

  • I like them all but Molly is my favorite.
  • Of the three you have, Molly. I don't care for Maggie unless it's derived from a full/formal name, and Keely reminds me of the phrase, "keel over" and part of a boat.

maggie is the name of one of my best friends. she is a nurse and never had problems being taken seriously as an adult professional. (she never goes by margaret) .

  • My sister is Molly Ann, so I vote for that one! Smile

  • I love Margaret and call her Maggie.    If you are set on just maggie... it is still my choice, but I would never do it.

Molly and Keely are NMS but ok.   What about Kylie, Kelly, or Kelsey or something like that?

  • I've got a Maggie and a Molly in nursing school with me. I never thought they were unprofessional names. I think they are great choices, but please, name your child anything but Keely...it's cringe worthy.

FWIW, I'm a professional woman named Molly and I don't ever have problems with my name being too cutesy or little girl-ish.

Molly....and NOT as a nn for Mary.  my BFF had this name & when she got married she legally changed her name to Molly...b/c NO ONE called her Mary & it didn't seem "more professional" at all

  • Our LO will be Molly, but as a nn for Amalia, not a given name. I think Molly is adorable, but I agree with pp who prefer to give the option of a more formal name.

    Exactly this.

I actually grew up with someone named Scott and they called him Skippy. I bet he's happy they named him Scott!  I have never heard of Molly as a nn, only a stand alone name. I would go with Molly.

  • I like Molly or Keely.

I went to school with girls each with these names, and the only one I can remember getting any sort of teasing with the name was Maggie.

The girl Keely, we had been sitting in Biology and watching a movie about mad cow disease.  They started talking about hamburger and how it is made from cows.  She said, "Hamburger is NOT made from cows!"  Uh, yeah...we were all dumbfounded.

But funny story aside, I think Molly or Keely goes best with Ann.

Maggie, it was in our top 3 if we were having a girl.
  • Molly, although I don't really like it with Ann.  Would Maggie be Margaret, or just Maggie?  Keely is NMS at all.
  • I like Molly.
