Baby Showers

Will your shower be a surprise.....

Or will you know about it?????[Poll]

Re: Will your shower be a surprise.....

  • It took me forever to figure out what a surprise shower is.  I think they only/primarily have them in PA, NJ, and NY.  I don't really understand why anyone would want it to be a surprise but hey, if it's your tradition knock yourself out.

  • If you know about it its not much of a surprise

  • When I had my oldest DD over 25 years ago...I had 3 showers and I knew the date of all of them.

When I was pg for my 3rd child (17 years after my oldest DS) my friend gave me a surprise shower.  I did not know the date or even that I was having one.  Here, we usually have have showers for mom for the first baby.  I thought I was going to a Tupperware party!  lol

  • I'm in NY and surprise bridal and baby showers are fairly common. I don't get it at all.

  • I think PPs are right - I have NEVER heard of surprise showers before the Bump.  Maybe it is because I'm a West Coast girl.  Maybe it's because I find that totally weird...shouldn't you warn a person that they're being put "on stage" for hours at a time!?!

  • As far as being put "on stage", it is really no different than a surprise birthday party or a surprise anniversary party.  Usually there is someone who knows about it that is close to you so they would make sure you look "good"...even if it is pretense to take you out to lunch or dinner...kwim?

My DH insisted I change my clothes when I had a pair of shorts on (39 weeks pg in August) to go to a Tupperware party.  In reality it was a surprise shower.  He did it in a way so I never suspected a thing.  For one thing, we don't "do" surprise showers here in Michigan (or rarely) and another he mentioned there would probably be people there I didn't know.  So glad I changed!  lol

That's my big issue. I don't like surprises to begin with, but the worst is seeing someone arrive to the shower site in "blah" clothes, hair and makeup not done, and being mortified, then pissed that no one at least told them, "Hey, let's go someplace fancy for lunch" or whatever, so they can look nice...

My SIL arrived at the restaurant for her bridal shower, which I didn't know was a surprise, and everyone jumped out at her, yelled surprise, and she turned around and left. She'd gone out the night before, was hungover, and in sweats with hair and makeup a mess. (She's a bit of a mess to begin with, but still...) So she left, went home, got cleaned up, and then came back. We'd all started eating in the meantime. Not optimal...

  • It wasn't a surprise in that I knew I was getting one but it was a surprise in that I didn't know when it was happening.
  • I was totally surprised for my bridal shower. I looked like crap (horrible pics) and felt totally panicked all day.  I finally began to relax when it was over:(  My mom and sister think that I NEED to be surprised?!?  I would actually like to show up in a dress i bought specifically for my shower and actually look presentable for this one. Not to mention, I don't like being center of attention and have been stressing about that part anyway.  And i personally don't think its safe to scare the living s--t out of someone who is about to give birth!?!?
  • The date of mine will be a surprise. I know there is going to be one I just don't know exactly when. Obviously my hubby is gonna tell me we're going out to eat somewhere fancy or sumthing so I dress nice, do my hair. The idea is that it's a surprise but I'll prob know what's going on & where we're going when we go. Smile

  • I planned a trip home to Texas during May.  I thought we were having a big BBQ at my Mother's house.  Mom and I got home that morning from doing some shopping and my sister had everyone there for a suprise baby shower.  I was completely suprised and overwhelmed.  I cried for about 10 minutes and then got with the program and had a great time.  25 people were there and not one of them spilled the beans!  I was amazed.  My friends and my husband's family are throwing me another shower here in Seattle, but I know about that one.  I will never forget the suprise shower, it was just awesome.

I'm from the West Coast as well and we've done/been to a lot of surprise showers.

Usually we tell the person we are going to [insert fancy restaurant] for lunch, so they end up dressing up.
