?s about flying with DS

Hello ladies!

So, we're taking trip down to FL to visit my grandparents and we're planning on flying. I have a few questions...

1-Will the change in air pressure hurt his ears? I know it can really bug me sometimes, but S/O claims he doesn't notice it...

2-I know infants fly for free but, is it worth it to buy them a seat of their own? For extra room, carseat, etc...

3-We have a Chicco travel system--how in the heck are we going to get that thing on the plane? And the car seat base? I can already feel the stress of this day coming.....haha

    1. yes the air pressue can hurt their ears.  It's best to give a bottle or pacifier at take off and touch down.

    2. For a 4 month old, I would not buy the extra seat.  He should fly "infant in arms" and most likely will sleep in your lap the whole time.

    3.  Stroller-you should be able to gate check this without a problem.  It will fit through security.

good luck--it's easier than you think.  The first time flying is always the hardest.

  • Let me just tell you, flying at 4 months is a BREEZE!   Just have someone help you collapse your stroller at secuirty, because some times the security people will not help you.   And when you're holding a baby, folding up and putting a stroller on the belt is near impossible.      But getting through security should be the most stressful part.

Once at the gate, ask the counter people for gate check claims for your car seat and stroller.     You should also be able to board first.    Save feeding for take off and he should fall asleep.   A flight to Florida is quick, he might sleep through the whole thing, with the gentle movement and white noise.

    Have fun!

  • I totally agree- 4 mos is the PERFECT age for flying IMO.  It's once they are able to move around on their own that it becomes problematic.  Take the travel system to the gate and they will gate check it for you- super simple.  Nurse/bottle/paci during take off and landing to help with the air pressure, but again, that was more problematic when he got older.  He basically just slept the whole time at that age.

Yep, all of this. :)  You'll do just fine, and he'll do fine as long as you remind yourself that you can handle it!  I flew several times with DD over the past 10-11 months, and the more she became mobile the harder it was to negotiate things, but at 4 months, all you have to bring is his food source and some diapers and clothes, and he'll be happy as a clam.  Enjoy your trip down here (I'm in Orlando now)!

  • I flew with E @ 5wk and 4mon, and we'll be flying again in 2 weeks ( @ 9 mon). Here's my advice:

    - If you can use your carseat without a base (Graco can, not sure about Chicco) then don't take the base! Check the manual.

    - Take stroller to the gate and gate check that and the carseat. I recommend SNGs, but if you don't have one, it's ok. I DO recommend getting a car seat bag from BRU. When you see how yucky the bag gets, you'll be glad your seat was in it. I also have a bag for my Zippy stroller.

    - If you have a baby carrier that has no metal in it, you can wear DC through security. This is awesome b/c you will need all your hands to load the belt. Also, wear slip-on shoes.

    - Offer something to suck during take-off and landing.....boob, paci, bottle, finger, whatever. I have sensitive ears so I feel it before DS.

    - Bring an extra set of clothes for each of you, and twice the diapers you think you will need in your carry on. you never know.

    - Enjoy! That's a short flight (we are making the same one for our cruise) and you will be done before you know it! It is a heck of a lot easier than driving!

The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down: 4/27/07 - Got engaged! 8/31/08 - Got married (to my best friend)! 12/30/08 - Got Pregnant! 9/3/09 - Welcome to the world, Elias Solomon! 8/16/10 - Got Pregnant, again! 5/14/11 - Welcome to the world, Talia Hadassah! 1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
  • There have actually been studies done showing the air pressure doesn't bother babies under 1, it is worse once they hit 1. That seems to be the case for us, but to be safe we always had him drink something on take off and landing.

    You will be fine!
