Pregnant after a Loss

s/o hospital tour-questions?

What questions are important to ask at a hospital tour? Also, would you pay an extra $300 to be guaranteed a private room? I have the choice between two hospitals for the delivery. One hospital doesn't have any actual private rooms, but you may not have a roommate depending on how busy they are. If you have a roommate, no one can stay with you. That worries me since the baby rooms-in. With the other hospital, they only have private rooms. Its a little farther away, so my dr charges a $300 travel fee for delivery and follow-up care. I'm leaning towards that hospital, but I don't know if its worth it. What do you ladies think?

  • No personal experience yet, but I can't imagine not having a private room... especially if baby is rooming in and no one can stay.

Well, good luck with your decision....

For me, the hospital that I will deliver at has all private rooms, but it's very likely that my doc won't be there... she splits with like 8 other doctors.  So, there are plusses and minuses.

This.  I'm lucky because both hospitals I am looking at will guarantee private rooms at no extra charge.

  • I don't have any experience and the hospital that I will deliver at only has private rooms. From what I hear though, it is worth it to have the private room. I have only heard bad stories about having a roommate.

  • Thanks ladies! I wish more hospitals here had all private rooms like at home. It would make the situation much easier:)

  • I should have added that the ones at our hospital because you're in their the whole time... labor, delivery, post-partum.... not sure if that's standard, though I can't imagine delivering in a non-private room.
  • I would pay more than $300 for a private room.  Period.  In the post partum stage your lochia can be very messy in the bathroom....I personally don't want to see my own blood let alone a strangers.  Our county hospitals have 4 women to a room post partum....can you imagine that nasty scene?

  • I had a semi private room when DS was born (at Mary Birch). I can't imagine DH not being able to stay with me, and would have demanded a private room if that was the case! DH did most of the diaper changes so I could take care of myself, and of course there was the scary event where DS started choking on his lung secretions in the middle of the night and turned blue. I couldn't have gone through it without help. Which hospitals are you looking at? I'm delivering this time at UCSD in Hillcrest, and at my tour Wednesday night that is one of my first questions. The only thing I do have to say about my semi private room was that it seemed like they had a monitor that said when someone used the bathroom because they were in to clean after everything use.

  • I would only be comfortable in a private room. It would be worth the $300 to me! I can't imagine not having my husband there over night. I had so many stitches after DS was born that I couldn't walk or get up without assistance. I needed him for everything!
