Kaiser and Natural Birth

My husband and I are 5 weeks pregnant, and have Kaiser. Has anyone had any experience with OB/Midwifes at the Sunnyside/Talbert location? I would really appreciate any reccomendations on caring, and observant staff that can help us in a natural, water birth.

Any tips on how to go about expressing our desires, and getting the quiet, calm birth plan that we desire would be greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all of the Oregon mommas and mommas-to-be!

Re: Kaiser and Natural Birth

  • I am seeing a MW at the Beaverton office now and we will likely be delivering at Kaiser Sunnyside (within the next 5 weeks), so I would be happy to let you know how things go.

  • Thank you so much!

Haven't had our first visit yet, so everything is still a bit scary... Hope everything goes wonderfully for you!

  • BIRTH PLAN!  This is a must if you are wanting things your way.  I have Kaiser but went to St. V.    You should ask Lislilynn about her birth story with Kaiser Sunnyside.  If you want to see my birth plan I can email it to you if you pm me your email addy.  I took hypno birthing and my birth plan is for a natural birth.  :)

  • Congrats on your pregnancy!!

For OBs, I really love Dr Barnes, really like Dr Algenio, and Dr Traynor is great if you don't mind a male OB.

I didn't like any of their midwives.  All of them were a bit too "crunchy" for me, but you might like that...?

If you are really set on having a quiet, med free, water birth, etc...I would look into hiring a Doula.  They are there to be your advocate, to back you up, and help you in labor, to get what you want.  My Doula actually teaches the birth class at Sunnyside, she's fabulous.

I delivered at Sunnyside and had a great experience.

  • Thanks for some names. I am not sure how "crunchy" will be too "crunchy for me...I think a good balance of natural and safe is what I am shooting for.

I have heard about hiring a Doula and was surprised to find out it is not that expensive.

Thanks so much for your help. I haven't had the best of luck with Kaiser for everyday stuff, so I have been a bit concerned. Your response has helped mellow me out a bit :)

  • I delivered at Sunnywide 10 weeks ago and had a fantastic experience.  I have had several friends deliver there as well, and we have all had very good births.  They were 100% on the same page with me and following my birth plan.  I wanted a natural birth and they did everything possible to support that.  I would highly recommend it!
  • Kaiser Sunnyside was amazing; I highly recommend them!  They have a really cool jacuzzi tub that you can soak in to ease labor pains.  When I was there in November to deliver my daughter, they said they weren't able to do water births yet.  This may have changed since November, so you may want to check with someone in Labor and Delivery.  Congratulations to you!
  • I know that during the tour they said that they did not allow water births. You can use the tub for laboring (which I did), but you get out to deliver.  However, another woman at Sunnyside who delivered the day after me said that they allowed her to give birth actually in the tub.  It isn't a guarantee, but sounds like it does happen.

BTW:  I thought that the tub would really help, but it didn't at all.  My time in the water was definitely the worst of my entire labor.  We had taken hypnobirthing as well.  Don't let them fool you. It hurts.
