Pain-med free induction!

At my 36 week appointment it was decided that I would be induced the following week after multiple growth ultrasounds indicating that the baby had stopped growing for a few weeks. The perinatologist said myplacenta was starting to look ?ratty?. We were happy to make it as long as we did since I had PTL at 31 weeks, followed by 6 weeks of contraction-stopping meds and bed rest.  Also, my son was born at 36 weeks so I wasvery excited to make it to term with this baby. We went in at 5am to start myinduction on June 1st (37w1d). They started my pitocin at 5:45am and the doctor came and checked me afew hours later when she got to the hospital. I was 2-3 cm/80% effaced (I hadbeen 2cm/60% a few days earlier). She stripped my membranes in hopes of gettingthings started.  I had contractions 3minutes apart for a really long time. I was rating the pain a 4/10, it wastotally manageable (I mentioned to my husband that it seemed almost too easy..).Everything pretty much stayed this way until my doctor came back at 2:00pm. Shechecked me and I was 4cm/90%. At that time, my water broke which was awesomebecause she was thinking about breaking it herself, but didn?t need to.  This is when it started to get crazy.

My contractions immediately became very strong and closertogether. I tried a few different positions throughout (bending over the bedwith my feet on the floor/knees on the floor and arms propped on bed), butworked best for me once the pain was really bad was to raise the head of thebed upright and kind of ?hug? the back. I was hugging the back of the bed and stickingmy butt out and my husband had this weird look on his face. Betweencontractions, I asked him what he was thinking and he said, ?I know it sounds reallyweird, but you look really sexy right now.? LOL, I love that man. Things werehappening so fast, I started getting the urge to push and this is when theyelling started. When I delivered my son naturally I was ?the screamer? at thehospital and apparently I was going to be this time too.  It?s such a primal feeling, that urge to pushand the need to yell.  My doctor ?recommended?(lol) me trying to breathe instead of yell, but yelling was what I needed toget myself through the contractions so that?s what I did. Gotta do what yougotta do. My body was trying to push and I told the doctor I couldn?t stop it,she checked me again and said I had just a little lip left, but since I reallyneeded to push they started getting everything set up for delivery. With my sonI went from 5cm-10cm in about 30 minutes and it looked like things were going inthe same direction this time. At this point, my doctor asked if one of themedical students could come observe and we said yes. When I was preparing topush, my husband was standing there just grinning so big (which I now think isadorable), but it made me so mad seeing him smiling like that when I was in somuch pain that I told him to Stop smiling at me, haha! But I apologized to himonce the contraction stopped J.

Pushing was so much easier this time around. With my son, Ireceived stadol  (had I known at the timethat I was as close to delivering as I was, I would NOT have received it), itmade me fall asleep between contractions and didn?t take any of the pain away.I hated that I felt so out of it at the end. This time around, I was SO awareof everything happening around me and it was awesome.  I could feel exactly what I needed to do. Ipushed through 2 contractions and she shot right out at 3:57pm. My husbandtells me she was plugging me up so when she came out, she was followed by afountain of amniotic fluid.  I wasTHRILLED to find out I didn?t tear or need an episiotomy! (I had stitches withmy son). The placenta was delivered soon after. Violet was immediately placedon my belly and I got my first good look at her. She was so tiny and perfectand she had a head FULL of dark, thick hair. We had been so worried about somany various issues during my pregnancy but in the end she was totally healthy. She was 5lbs 8oz (bigger than we thought she?d be!), 18.5 inches long andscored an 8 & 9 on her Apgars.  Shewas one ounce more and a half inch longer than my son at birth  JI was up and walking pretty much immediately and still feel absolutelyfantastic.  Honestly, not having stitchesor drugs is amazing. If it weren?t for the bleeding, I?d barely even be able totell anything as traumatic as birthing a baby had just happened which is justtruly awesome.  I have to tell you girlshow amazing my husband was during the whole thing. He was so encouraging theentire time and kept me laughing and happy between contractions. He knew howmuch I wanted to go without any meds and he totally made it happen.  He still keeps telling me how awesome and incontrol I was and how proud he is of me. I really, really love that man. I hope that you girls planning on goingmed-free that are faced with possible inductions/augmentations (labor with myson was augmented with pitocin) will read this and see that it?s totally possible. It seems like so many people throw their natural birth plans out the window when they hear the word 'pitocin.' Yes, it was hard, but so, so worth it!  Here are a few pictures for your enjoyment J

  • Thanks for sharing your positive induction story. She is precious! We are naming our little girl Violet too. :) Take care!
  • I was really inspired by your story.  Your labor was so close to what mine was with my first daughter.  I delivered her at 37 weeks, when my water broke things got crazy just as you described, I hated Stadol (it made me feel like I was drunk) and will never get it again, I was comfortable in the exact same position (leaning on the back of the bed).  I did however have an epidural, I'm thinking this time around I may try not to and reading your story gave me a little confidence boost!  Thank you and congrats!
