DH and I rented The Business of Being Born last night and now we're scared of hospital birthing and excessive medical intervention. We had been planning on delivering at Fairview Riverside (and I've been seeing an OB who I love at Fairview Riverside Women's), but was just wondering if anyone had any experiences there and whether the docs and nurses were willing to follow the birth plan you came in with. Thanks in advance!

Re: Any opinions on Fairview Riverside?
I see a midwife at Fairview Riverside Women's (who I also love) and although I haven't delivered yet, I'm fairly confident that they're willing to follow my birth preferences. I think my biggest complaint off my birth plan that they aren't willing to follow is that they won't let me eat or drink during labor even if I want to.
I've heard great things about Woodwinds and St Joes. Low c-section rates at both. I've also heard having a midwife helps - they're less likely to intervene or jump to surgery.
Talk to your OB, tell them your concerns. The Business of Being Born is a good documentary, but I think some of it is a little skewed. What are your OB's practices? Ask them specific questions (i.e., if labor stops progressing, what happens? Can I try walking/nipple stimulation/etc before moving onto pitocin?). Good luck to us both, I'll try and update after this little guy gets here, hopefully I'll have some better advice then!

I had Maya at Fairview Riverside. Everyone was very nice and went along with my birth preferences. I did have to be induced- at 41 weeks my fluid was low- but I did go without any other intervention. My water broke on its own and I was able to get a monitor on that allowed me to labor in the tub.
Let me know if you have any questions.
My doctor wasn't really for a natural birth asking "Why do you want one, you don't get a trophy" but I loved my doctor other then that, the nurses are really the one that need to follow the birth plan. When I hand it to them, they seemed excited by it.
This was not at Riverside, but I think the nurses are more the ones to be worried about. I saw my doctor for all of 10 minutes before pushing.
