where to buy furniture?

I'm so overwhelmed with the furniture thing! We're trying to keep costs down a bit - is under 1500 for all furniture/mattress etc do-able?
Where did you get your furniture? Any feature that you think are super helpful (for example, I'm leaning towards a changing table with drawers instead of just shelves to keep the clutter contained)? Any brands you've completely eliminated? Any brands you love?
Help please! We're not setting up the nursery until the babys born, but I want to know exactly what I want so it's ready to go when the time comes. I hit the halfway point tomorrow and realize I need to get my act together!

I really liked ours... it is all hardwood and good quality. They have excellent deals. They usually run coupons which you can find online which give additional discounts.

Why not use a dresser for a changing table? I'm sure there are many in your area on craigslist that you could refinish to look brand new. That's one way to keep costs down.
We'll probably re-use/recycle some of the stuff in our house for the furniture, like dressers, shelves, side tables etc. Of course the Crib & things that baby will be in will be brand new and safer.
I think 1500 is a good budget.

There are no brands I have really eliminated yet.
We are getting a dresser to match our crib from IKEA. We are just getting a regular dresser and putting a changing pad on it. You can get a changing pad for like $30.
All in all we are spending (on furniture) under a $1000 on furniture. But we are just having a crib, dresser, and glider/rocker. No other furniture, at least not for now. But that does not include the bedding or any decorations. So under $1500 is definitely doable

We got this 3 piece set from Babies r us. We just feel in love with it. I love the fact that the changing table has a little rim to keep the changing pad in the right spot. Also the rim comes off so once you no longer need the changing pad you can take it off. We got the 3 pieces and the full sized bed convertor for $1131. It was on sale for 30% off. I'm sure if you keep your eyes open, it'll go on some type of sale again. Good luck!

We bought ours at BRU, and I didn't feel like a very saavy shopper at the time. They did have a 20% off coupon at least on the day we made our puchases. I think that some of their brands are definitely better than ours - I used the reviews in the Baby Bargains book as a guide. They gave Baby Italia (one of the brands at BRU) a good rating (as well as most of the JCP furniture). The store manager did tell me that it was really hard to find a good white finish (if that's what you're going for), and we picked a good brand for that. We bought a classic crib (not a fancy lifestyle one, because do I really need it to turn into a queen/full bed?) and a long low dresser. I am holding out on the glider, and seeing if we can get that as a gift!
We spent about 700 for the furniture total.

I would say a very STRONG YES!! The furniture looks very clean and modern. I am sure you could get some of the same at BRU but I just liked JCP's styles better. Plus, I found that they were cheaper and offered more "deals" on their furniture. Our location did not have cribs in the store to look at so it was a gamble... but the reviews helped me decide!
I also bought the conversion rails at the same time to prepare just in case the style is discontinued. I also bought one of the most firm matresses from them as well.
Seconding abartane (hiya lady!!!!).... I ordered crib and dresser/changer from jcp.com. We are very happy with the quality, and thanks to Alice, we got a 40% off coupon. I think we paid about 1000 for both pieces, including shipping (shipping was kind of high for the dresser; we had the crib shipped to the local store). We're debating getting the matching night stand too. MaryEllen has the same crib that I have -- it's the Monterey crib. (I think she has espresso color; I have butternut.) What I like about the furniture is that it's a hardwood (poplar) whereas most of the mid-range cribs at BRU are softwoods (pine mostly). It seems to be very well-made and is also rated high inside the Baby Bargains book.
The mattress and changing pad I got from BRU. I paid $106 including tax for both -- I used a 20% coupon which essentially made the changing pad free. I put both on my registry, but figured that since we wanted to see what everything would look like in the nursery, I'd just buy those two things. We got a Serta mattress, with 150 coils. Serta changing pad too.
The only thing we didn't buy yet are the conversion rails for the crib. We'll buy those after baby gets here. Be aware, though, that it took about 3 weeks for our furniture to get here after ordering, so if you're waiting until baby arrives, you might be furniture-less until baby is nearly a month old.
