Newborn & 18mo...getting out?

So my DD is 2wks old and my DS is 18mos - it's been beautiful weather and I'm dying to get out of the house with them, but I'm having a hard time figuring out HOW to do it!

I have yet to buy a double stroller because I'm not sure which one will work best for us....any suggestions?  DS needs to be in a stroller as he is not good at holding hands or staying close to me, so a sit & stand would not work. I want something easy to maneuver and not too heavy.  Is there some sort of double that can accomodate a carseat plus have a seat for DS - then eventually have 2 seats??

I bought the ERGO with newborn insert, which may be my best bet for getting to parks, etc.  But DD seems to get SO overheated, sweaty, in there - and that's just wearing her inside in the air conditioning.  What happens when we're outside in 80+ degree heat?!  Is there a better carrier for her?

Also, how long can I expect DS to be a whiney, crying mess? :)  He's having a hard time adjusting to her being here - and even though she sleeps most of the day away and he gets plenty of 1 on 1 attention, everything seems to cause a meltdown lately.  Is it wrong to start being "firm" with him when it comes to whining, etc - or is this a phase that he'll get through once he realizes the baby is here to stay?

Thank you!

  • i have a sit and stand stroller and i thought for sure it woudl be torture on me with my oldest but it does have buckles on the seat. She has no problems sitting there being buckled in. Maybe try one at the store. its hard to get out at first but you will get the hang of it.

  • We have a Baby Jogger City Mini Double. It can accomodate a car seat when you buy the adapter, but I bought it and didn't care for it, so we just put DS right in the stroller as the seat reclines almost fully.

  • we have the sit & stand that has a back seat option.  it's easy to take off and put back on.  it's baby trend sonic.

    good luck!

  • My mom bought us a Graco Duoglide double stroller.  It was pretty cheap and it's worked just fine for us the times we've needed it.  It accomodates a car seat and has a regular seat in front for DS (14 months old).  Both seats fit up to either 40 or 45 lbs.

I, too, am having a hard time getting out with both of them.  DS hates being buckled into anything right now, but will run off if you set him down.  We have the Ergo with the newborn insert, too, and DD gets pretty sweaty in it.  Luckily, we live in an area that is pretty much 50-65 degrees year round, so summer heat isn't much of an issue for us.  It takes a lot of work and time to get out of the house, but I figure the more often I do it, the easier it becomes....I hope :)  GL!

  • Hi - I am having the same problems!  I haven't bought a double stroller yet because I am not sure which one to get.  So far I've only made it out in the yard with the 2 of them.  I put the baby in the carseat and into the travel system stroller and wheel him around the yard/deck while my daughter plays.  I highly doubt I will be taking the 2 of them out anywhere else for awhile, I just don't think I have it in me right now!

She has also been a whiney crying MESS since we brought the baby home.  I have been cutting her slack because I know she is adjusting to the baby and I figure I will let it go for about another week and then I am going to have to start being firm with her and not let her get her way all the time!  I do feel really bad for her b/c she is used to having me all to herself but my patience is wearing thin due to lack of sleep right now!   Good luck - I only make it through the day knowing it will eventually get easier!

  • I had a double from the start when I had DD#1 and DD#2 (Jane Powertwin). It didn't take a carseat, but reclined so I could put DD#2 in from birth.

I think that you should take a look at the Baby Jogger City Select for your situation. It would work really well. I'm not sure what your stroller budget is (that one can get pricey).

As for carriers, look into "woven" carriers (Storchenweige, Baby Mama gauze, Vatanai, Didymos), and not stretchy carriers (like the Moby)........the woven wraps are lighter and won't get super hot like the stretchy ones. They are great for hot weather, and work from birth to like age 4 (an older age)......

  • #1 and #2 are 16 months apart.  I just kept #1 in the stroller and wore #2 in my stretchy wrap, but he was born in September so it wasn't crazy hot by the time we got outside.  Either way, I'd still go with a wrap of somesort.

As for the whining....  I'm not patient AT ALL with whining and don't put up with it, so I would have no problem addressing it.  My 20mo is not allowed to whine, and I've been like that with him for a few months, so I think it's a fine time to address it with him.  I either do time-out or hold him on my lap.  I ask if he's tired, because boys who are tired whine, and do we need to go to bed?  Sometimes we actually do, and then I'll put him down.  He's to the point now that he'll just snap out of it and be happy, but that's a couple months of timeouts and going to bed.
