if you're dairy free did you also give up soy?

according to this kellymom article most babies with a dairy allergy also have a problem with soy. I've been dairy and soy free for 3 1/2 weeks, but I keep wondering if soy is a problem or just dairy.

what's been your experience?

A significant percentage of babies with cow's milk protein allergy will also react to soy.

Re: if you're dairy free did you also give up soy?

  • I gave up dairy and soy.  So far, so good, and we've been told that we can start to add things back once we get to 6 months.

  • I have a 10 month old and I gave up dairy/soy until he was about 6-7 months.  I tried just taking dairy out and it seemed to not totally help, then I took soy out too and it seemed to make a difference.  He is still on prevacid, but he is able to eat dairy and soy himself now too!  Hang in there!
  • I don't know if either one of you will see this, but if you do--- did/do you eat foods with soy oil and soy lecithin in them?

Are soy oil and soy lecithin safe for my soy-allergic child?
  • I am both dairy and soy free.  We tried to add both into the diet on different days.  Addy's reaction to soy is actually worse then her reaction to dairy.  My Pedi's kid was only allergic to soy and was fine with cows milk.

  • I gave up obvious dairy at 6 weeks because is LO was awake, he was screaming.  A week later, he had a bloody diaper, so I immediately dropped all dairy, hidden and obvious and soy too.  I didn't wait to try a trial and error.  Now, I'm nervous about trying to add things back in.

  • Well, I think it depends on your LO, but it is true that around 50% of babies that are allergic milk also have prolems with soy. So, it wouldn't hurt to keep eliminating both for the time being at least until your LO is symptom-free (and definitely avoid any "hidden" sources of dairy or soy too!). Then you could try adding soy back in to see if your LO has any reactions to it.
