Getting LO on a schedule

Hello Ladies!

I know that my LO is probably still too young but when did your LO's start developing a schedule? I know newborns sleep alot in the beginning but would love any tips to get on a set nap schedule. I know our nights may still vary but I am looking forward to a set 3 or so naps a day! Or am I being way too ambitious at this stage? TIA!

Re: Getting LO on a schedule

  • My DS kind of put himself on a schedule when he was about 6 weeks old.  He wakes up between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning and then gets sleepy between 9:30 and 10:30 so that is when I put him down for his first nap.  He will wake up from this nap between 11:30 and 12:30.  He will be up until he starts showing signs of being sleepy again around 2:30-3:30.  He will wake up from his afternoon nap between 4:30 and 5:30.  After that he is usually awake until between 9:00 and 10:00 at which point we put him to bed.

I don't know how old your LO is but the best thing you can do is to pay attention to his/her cues.  If your LO starts looking sleepy then rock them to sleep and put them down where you want them to nap.  We swaddle DS for his naps and at night and he sleeps really well because he associates the swaddle with sleep.  He also always naps/sleeps in the same place.  If you work with your baby's cues instead of trying to force a set schedule on them you will have a lot more success although it might be a while before you start really seeing a "schedule".

  • DD sleeps pretty much all day.  Around 9 AM and anywhere between 3 and 5 PM she'll wake up for maybe 2-3 hours, but that's about it, besides feedings, of course.  I figure if she's tired she may as well sleep, it's better than keeping her up and having her be cranky.

  • I would say he started putting himself on a schedule at a month but it's not exact. He is usually down for the night between 10 and 11 and up for the day between 7 and 8.

  • It helps if you write down when you feed your LO and when they sleep for a couple days.  I did this and noticed a natural patern that I was able to slightly modify (more feeds during the day, which makes for less at night).

Right now she's down at 7:30 p.m. until about 2 a.m. so I'm thinking of introducing a dreamfeed at 11ish to see if that will tide her over until 6-7 a.m.
