I feel like a cr@ppy mom

Maddie, who has very fair skin, has *never* had a sunburn.  I'm OCD with sunscreen whenever we go outside.

So today we went to the beach and I went through my usual lathering up with sunscreen (twice) to make sure Maddie didn't get a burn.  We kept Maren in the shade the entire time so it didn't even occur to me to put sunscreen on her.  Yep, my 3 month old has a sunburn now.

How sh!tty am I? I go 3.5 years without my oldest getting a sunburn but I let my 3 MONTH old get burned.

  • I wouldn't have thought that if you were in the shade most of the time that you would get burned.  So I would have done the same....

  • I am SO sorry that happened!  Please don't beat yourself up - you did exactly what I would have done, and I'm anal about sun protection, too.
  • you're not alone....when my dd was 6months we went to galveston, we both thought we did so well at applying sunscreen, but also kept her under the umbrella all day.  still, you could see were we missed under her eyes  and nose.  we went out for dinner that night and thought everyone was starring at us and our burned dd, what bad parents we were.  i think it happens to everyone.
  • Don't be too hard on yourself.  My pedi told me I couldn't use sunscreen until at least 6 months anyway.  The best protection at that age is to keep them in the shade, so you did the right thing!  Sometimes you just can't predict the power of the sun, even in the shade.  :(
