What crib do you have?

And where did you get it? I'm having a terrible time finding a crib that we like and that I think will hold up, that doesn't cost a fortune.

I think the biggest trouble I'm having is that we're such DYIers that I have a hard time paying the price for something I know is marginal quality.

And I thought I found 1 or 2 I liked, but Baby Bargains did not review them well.

Any tips? What do you have?

I'm hoping for something hardwood, non-toxic finish that is under $400 (preferably under $300) that has gotten good safety and long-lasting reviews. Also not extremely large since it's a tiny room. I don't care much about conversions and storage drawers. A family member has a toddler bed we can use.

Re: What crib do you have?

  • We have the Graco Lauren. I like it and it was really inexpensive. I did a ton of research on cribs and this crib seemed to get better reviews than some of the other cribs that are double or triple the price. It also came in as being one of the safest for the lowest amount of formyldehyde. We bought ours at Babies R Us with the 20% off coupon.

  • Sounds like you already got the Baby Bargains book - which is what I was going to recommend you looking at! I don't have mine handy, but I would think that since your requirements are pretty specific you could find what you're looking for out of there pretty easy.

I got the Babi Italia Europa Palisades Crib from Babies R Us.

I haven't used it yet, but I think it's gorgeous, reasonably priced, and rated highly in Baby Bargains. It's not exactly tiny though. Have you checked out Ikea too?

  • have you look at Ikea? they are great cheap cribs
  • I have the Leksvik crib and changing table from Ikea. I'm not due until late July, so I don't know how baby will like it, but so far, we love it. It's incredibly sturdy, super easy to assemble, cheap ($150 I think), and it looks great.

Young House Love had a long blog posting about their crib search. They ended up getting a crib from Wal-Mart. I know it one of their criteria was that it had a non-toxic finish...

    I hope that helps.

  • We have the Munire Essex.  I think we paid just under $400 for it.  The finish is non-toxic (which was a good thing since DS chewed on the railings quite a bit in one nap time)  The only bummer is it seems to chip somewhat easily.  (But we were able to request touch up stain, which definately helps.)

  • The original crib we bought was just recalled last month, so we did some very quick research in the midst of exchanging. We ended up getting the Delta Serenity for both kids. It had the best reviews in our price range. We really like it too..it's very stable, the bars are a great length apart, it was super easy to put together and Olivia had no problems transitioning into this one. She's 17 months old, VERY tall for her age and very strong...the crib is on the lowest settings and she is nowhere near climbing out or anything.

I have this crib, the changing table, and dresser. We got it at Baby Depot (Burlington Coat Fact) and LOVE it. GL!

  • You said you were a DIY'er so I am going to throw this out there... But only if you truly know what you are doing...

Have you considered making your own baby crib?

DH made Livie's crib.  He ordered plans on-line (less than $20) and then modified them to meet our design choices, checked against current safety standards, etc.

The crib turned out awesome, and I sleep easy at night knowing that it is safe, quality construction.  We know exactly what kind of wood, stain, glue, etc. went into the crib.  We know that it is well put together with quality materials, etc.

Obviously though, it isn't a project you would want to take on if you weren't very comfortable with woodworking.

Here is a pic from right after he finished it...

  • We have the baby's dream infinity. LOVE it. Made in the USA, and very sturdy...as well as very well reviewed!

like the poster above we built our crib.  that being said...it was a nine month process(we finished 4 days before my DS was born on my due date) and actually rather expensive.  I love it and that my DH built it but for the next baby we will be buying ;-)

  • Thanks for the tips, ladies! And also good to hear two of you have built your own cribs. DH and I are actually considering this even more now, considering we were able to find the federal safety standards online last night. We are certainly comfortable with woodworking and have the tools needed. DH is actually building us a knock-off Pottery Barn bed right now.

Last night I found these plans on Ebay, which we might consider.

  • Have you checked Buck's? That way you could semi-DIY by staining/painting yourself. I'm not sure on cost.

  • Not sure if this is up your alley, but DH and I also wanted a quality crib, without the high price.  We found a Pottery Barn Kids sleigh crib on Craigslist plus the PBK's glider for $375 for both.  Both look practically brand new.
