Baby stool ?

Kash has had diarrhea on and off for a couple of weeks.  He is really fussy and clingy and not eating well.  I also don't think he is digesting his food well because I could tell you exactly what he ate by looking in his diaper. I am not a doctor, but he seems hydrated.  Tears when he cries, wet diapers, etc.

For the last week his stool has changed from diarrhea to this frothy soft yellow stool.  And the food that he ate the night before is in whole pieces throughout it (GROSS-I know!).  When he has this kind of BM, it is a mess!  All up and down his back and legs...throw out clothes kind.

Anyway...he had it real bad all last night and this morning and of course it is Saturday.  The on call nurse said to take him to ER and have a culture done.  I have been there done that and the children's ER in my hospital is such a waste of time with a huge bill. He has had diarrhea enough times that I know the drill.  This foamy yellow stuff with whole food pieces in it is new though.

I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this type of stool and if I should take it seriously.

Re: Baby stool ?

  • Does he have a low grade fever? And, have you checked his gums??

Sounds like classic teething symptoms to me.

  • Loading the player...
  • I know he is teething because at his 12 month well check up, she said he was getting five teeth.  Not sure how she knew that because I still have yet to see a thing!

Is this type of stool normal during teething?

  • It can vary by baby but in general their stool will be more loose- for example E's currently smells foul and can no longer be dumped in the toilet..

If the blow outs are continued (say more than a day or so) vs loose stool I'd worry about diaper irritation and dehydration- but, if he's otherwise okay I'd probably leave it until you can get a regular appointment.

I should edit to say (because it almost sounds as if dehydration is normal)  any concerns about dehydration take him in.  I also fed more bland items (think brat diet) during this period so they have an easier time digesting..HTH

  • I haven't experienced that, but Lil Miss has four teeth coming in that I can see. She has been pooping about 4-5 times a day, which is a lot more than usual. Every time she is about to cut a tooth she gets diaper rash.  Her poor lil bum is so red an irritated. Also, she is slightly warm and her usual exuberance has been taken down a notch or two.  She has spent most of the past three days playing on my lap, and has been waking every night at 3 am.  The last two nights all she wanted was to sleep in mommys bed.

So, based on that, I would say if your instinct is this is teething related, don't go to the ER yet.  I think (esp with a LO) the ER is very stressful and can get you sick(er). Did the On Call nurse say anything about a flu or virus going around? Has/ is anyone else sick?  If Kash is staying hydrated and in otherwise good spirits, I'd personally wait it out until I could get an office visit.

:::hugs::: becasue I know this is hard. Go with your instinct. Hopefully those teeth will be through soon and Kash will be feeling better.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies; I am going to keep him hydrated and wait it out a few days.
