Flying with baby - car seat or wrap?

I plan on flying with L this summer to see my family and will be traveling alone (yay) - she will be about 4-5 months old when I go. When traveling through the airport, what do you think would be the best way to carry her - in her car seat or in a wrap of some sort? And if I am wearing her, do I have to take her out to go through security and then wrap her up again? I am thinking the wrap would be best for on the plane so I can use my arms (flight is nearly 4 hours) and she can sleep comfortably. Thoughts?

And I am dreading changing her in those tiny bathrooms....ugh.

Re: Flying with baby - car seat or wrap?

  • mar's first flight was at 4 months (I think?) and I flew with her in the Moby.  I did not take it off, but I did take her out of it.  They gave me no problems with it (it was at Hobby.)  They also didn't give me any grief with take off and landing, probably because she was sleeping soundly then and they didn't want to wake her up!

Every flight since then, she's been in the ring sling and I've had to take it off (metal rings) through security.  I've also had mean flight attendants who made me take her out during take off and landing.  The ring sling is pretty easy though because I just loosen the top rail of it and make it look like it's not holding her.

She just always slept so well in the wrap and sling that I never even thought about taking her in the car seat.  My parents had a car seat when we landed, so it wasn't necessary and the wrap was just so much easier and comfortable for us both.

  • I just travelled with DS in an Ergo. Security made a point of telling me that I did not have to take him out of it!! You do have to unfasten it for take off though, I've always had them tell me that no matter if I used a ring sling, mei tai, or the ergo.

When I travelled with just DD, I took the stroller the first time and put the carseat on it. Hated it, it was SO much of a hassle. Because you have to rely on the kindness of strangers or the security guy to get your stroller folded down and on the conveyor belt or else attempt to do it while holding the baby with one hand (which is completely impossible with my strollers). Then, when you get to the end of the jetway, you have to fold the stroller down again, and that's where I never found anyone to help me and I was almost in tears before I got everything situated.

  • I've never had to take tracey out of the carrier (moby or becco). I still travel with her in the beco.

I have inconspicuously had her in the moby during take-off, but she was sleeping and I had her tucked under a blanket.  On our last flight there was a woman behind us with a baby in a bjorn. He was asleep and she was exhausted from a lot of travel. She was seated on the aisle and the flight attendant made her wake him up and take him out. She was quite put out and the flight attendant didn't tell her why he couldn't stay in it (not approved restraint device). I told her to get a moby and sit by the window.

I do miss the moby now that Tracey is bigger. On bumpier flights I would pop her in the moby facing front like a jump suit. She was more secured to me. I can't do that in the becco comfortably because it's not made to be used facing out.

That all said, we are taking a car seat on the plain for the first time this summer when we fly to Chicago. At 24 1/2 lbs and super tall she just doesn't make a good lap child any more!
