first time home buyer $96K is too expensive???

I watch these shows and am dumbfounded that there are houses out there for under $100K..and people find them to be too expensive. Guess location really does make a big difference!

Re: first time home buyer $96K is too expensive???

  • I just watched that!

Yeah...we had to put down a bigger down payment than that in order to buy in the DC area.

  • Yeah, it makes you wonder what the job market is like in those places, or how much an average salary is.

  • I do love this show though.

I couldn't watch it when we were living in NYC - my rent on my forth floor walkup one bedroom was twice most of these people's mortgages. It made me furious.

But then I moved, and now my NYC friends can resent me in the same way. Ah, home ownership!

What?! You mean there are houses that are less than $200K?! Are you sure they are actually houses?

  • Depends on where you are. Houses are cheaper here in TX, so it wouldn't be hard for me to find a starter home in the DFW metroplex for under 100K. Also depends on how far out from the metroplex core you want to be. I could go out to the outer ring of the metroplex and find a relatively newly built house of a good size for a small family for about 80-100k. Could also find an older home 15-40 years old (may or may not be a fixer upper) usually bigger for that price in the suburbs closer to Dallas. If I wanted to live in Dallas proper, I wouldn't really want to live in a house or neighborhood that cost 100k!

  • Some examples:

This is nice but kind of out there unless you work further up north in the metroplex!

This is older and needs some updating, but it in a suburb very close to downtown Dallas.

Even if you wanted the fast paced city life though, it's more than 100K but not terrible here! This is in the West End (my fave part) of Downtown Dallas!

  • I have to admit my first house was a fixer in an Indianapolis suburb and I paid $25,000 for it, and sold it 2 years later for $80,000. Also, my parents just bought a house out in the desert here in So.Cal for $30,000, but it's more a weekend home because the closest jobs are an hour drive away and minimum wage jobs.

  • I dont think you could find a house here under 100k.  It really is all about location.  My folks moved from here (alaska) and sold their 30 year old  modest home for about 210.  They moved to texas, bought a brand new home, bigger, better, for 180k.

  • I know! I know it really depends on location, but in my area you can't even buy a POS in forclosure for under $250,000! Its ridiculous!

  • In our area 50k-80k is average, anything more is considered expensive.  We live in a fairly rural area though.  The closer you are to civilization the more expensive it gets.  Its all based on the cost of living and average incomes of the area.  I wish we could make more money and still have low cost housing!

I have a friend who lives in Bloomington, and a big brand new house there cost as much as what we paid for a one bedroom loft in the heart of Chicago. Now we're looking at townhomes and couldn't find one we liked for under $300K! Heck the 2 bed condo we rent was up for sale for $350K. BIL just bought a house in Cincinatti for $110K, it pains me that we won't be able to buy a townhome where we want to until we can afford half a million. And no, forclosures here are probably OUT of our price range.

That's why we left DC!!!  We got twice the house for half the price in NC.  Still not under $100K... but it goes to show that DC is ridonkulous!!  And I don't miss my 4 hour commute either! Wink

  • My DH and I paid $75K for our house in West Texas. It is a 3bd/1.5 bath with attached garage, hardwood floors, extra room, fenced in yard. We are now in the process of trying to sell it so we can move.

BTW: What show are you watching?
