Has anyone donated breastmilk before?

I am interested in finding out information about donating breastmilk. I have read some info on a few websites but was wondering if anyone here has done this. If so, did you go through an organization? Were you sure that it actually was given for infants? Any information about your experience donating would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Has anyone donated breastmilk before?

  • I do not know much about donating, but I do know our hospital uses it for the premature infants instead of giving them formula until they are term ( I work in the NICU).  We get our milk from the Austin Milk Bank.

  • I'm in the process of becoming a donor w/ the Austin Milk Bank  but since DS has had thrush the past few weeks I have been dumping my extra milk. If you have specific questions about how the process works I might be able to help.

I also donated about 300 ozs to a family that adopted a newborn here in Houston.  It was a private donation, not through an organization, kat.in.the.hat connected me with the family.   The dad came and picked up about 300oz of milk on Mother's Day and I delivered a few more bags to their house a week or so later and met mama and baby.  It was honestly the best feeling in the world, especially on Mother's Day.   If you're interested in private donation, there are resources for connecting w/ moms in need.

  • I worked at the Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin for three years before I went to medical school.  I was there literally from the beginning, and I am amazed at how much milk they now pasteurize.  It's an amazing organization.  I absolutely love the neonatalogists that started it.  You only have to donate 100 oz of milk.  There are restrictions about what medications you can take, the amount of caffeine, your previous travel, etc.  There are multiple depots in the Houston area for drop off.  You will be required to do a blood test for communicable diseases (HIV, Hep B/C, Syphilis, HTLV I and II).

I would only donate to a HMBANA organization and MMBA is a great choice.

Congrats on your decision to donate!!

  • if you're interested in setting up a private donation, Milk Share is an excellent resource

Suzi - 300 oz!!!!!!!!! you are freaking amazing!!!!

  • I made a private donation after a request from a mom's group I belong to.  I felt great about being able to do something to help a sick baby (in my case) and it freed up freezer space.  Win win!

  • I donated about 300oz to Austin Milk Bank. I used the drop-off site at Texas Woman's Hospital. They are a GREAT organization and I highly recommend donating milk. I donated even though my son wasn't exclusively BF. He had formula during the day b/c my DH didn't like "dealing with" the stored BM. So, basically I nursed at night and everything I pumped during the day went to the milk bank.
