Q re OBs and delivery dates

I was talking to a friend this weekend and she told me when they figured out her due date for her LO, her OB scheduled her c-section and induction @ the hospital pre-emptively - like she was 8 weeks PG and they got her on the schedule.  And, she had no risk factors that would make her any more likely for either the c/s or induction.

I have NEVER heard of this, but she told me several of her friends - some in the same practice, some in other practices - have seen the same thing happen.  Did your/will your doctor do the same thing?

This girl ended up changing docs and going to a midwife b/c she was scared off regular OB practices.

  • I've never heard of that before. I got induced at 40 weeks because I was on Lovenox shots but doctor didn't actually schedule it with the hospital until the day before.

  • No, that seems like overkill. When i passed my due date, she scheduled my induction for like 41.5 weeks but luckily he came on his own before that.

  • I've never heard of scheduling a c/s or induction that early. Usually the doctors wants to see how you will progress. Is this her first child? Maybe I can see them scheduling a c/s if you she has already had a c/s and doesn't want to or can't have a vaginal birth.

  • It could be a case of it being so much easier to get on the schedule now and it is never in stone. I am surprised to hear it was that early, but I have seen drs on the phone negotiating and begging to get a patient in at the end. I probably would talk with the dr to find out why they are doing it so soon.

  • I find it very odd that the OB scheduled both an induction and a C/S - wouldn't a failed induction call for an emergency c/s?

Initially my reaction was run for the hills, but if the OB could somehow explain the super-early-pre-scheduled C/S and had scheduled the induction for the latest possible point in your friend's pg I could accept it.

I have a phobia of C/S & therefore also had a phobia about being induced, and when my EDD came and went w/ DD, I ended up w/ a pitocin induction and was "offered" 3 dates 41 wks, 41 wk + 1 day and 41 wks +4 days, by the surgery coordinator @ my old OB practice.  Even though there was no medical reason for me not to be able to get induced @ 42 weeks I was told all of the induction "slots" were taken for that day, so I went w/ the 41 wks + 4 days.  Though it would have freaked me out in hindsight I would have appreciated having my name on the list for the last possible day to have given myself more time.

  • That would kinda freak me out, but my situation was similar to Daisy's.  At my due date, there were not any induction slots available for me...my OB actually told me just to come to the hospital and say that my contractions were really painful and that he would induce without it being a scheduled induction.  Luckily my water broke on my own so I avoided the shadiness.  ;)

  • That is really shady and would have made me run for the hills too.  I also don't think that is keeping with the hypocratic oath but that is another topic altogether.
