Norfolk/Virginia Beach Hospital Opinions

We are hoping DH gets his orders in the next week (fingers crossed). I am trying to be proactive so I am researching doctors in the 2 places that are our top choices. I have Tricare Standard and would like to go to a civilian doctor/hospital.  I am nervous since I will be so far along when we move. I have heard that some drs will not take you after a certain point.

Has anyone delivered at Bon Secours in Norfolk? If so what was your experience?

Re: Norfolk/Virginia Beach Hospital Opinions

  • I have a couple of friends that have had babies at Bon Secours (DePaul).  They have a Midwifery Center too if that interests you.

I actually had a really great birthing experience at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and am going back their for #2.

  • I don't know much about the hospital you mentioned above, but I had my first child at Sentara Leigh hospital and my second at had at Portsmouth Naval and both were great!!
  • Thanks ladies. I know 2 people that gave birth at Portsmouth and one loved it and the other hated it. I guess that can be true about any place. It is really hard to leave a doctor I really like that close to the end but that is the life.
  • I've also heard great things about Portsmouth from my local mom's group. I didn't deliver there but I took DD there to see a specialist and had a great experience. Good luck!
  • i delivered at Sentara Norfolk and it was great...they are co-located with CHKD (childrens hospital) which worked out well since LO had to get an upper GI evaluation at 2 days old...my dr was thru EVMS (eastern virginia med school) since i was high risk and they were fantastic:)  my doula highly recommends De Paul too...i can give you her name if you are interested in having a doula...GL

Thanks, I am not planning on using a doula unless DH is not going to be there. Hopefully he will be but if not I will take the recommendation.

I delivered at Sentara Norfolk and had a good experience too.  I was high risk and my doctors were with EVMS.  However, EVMS are officially the only high risk doctors in the area and do not participate in Tricare.  I have Tricare Standard and had to pay 15% of the Tricare allowable charge to the practice because they are non-participating.
  • I delivered at Sentara Leigh and had a wonderful experience there.  My doctor's office was located in VB, Dr. Richard Valentine, and I also really liked them.  It's two doctors, two midwives and a nurse practitioner.  Karen was the midwife that delivered me and my labor and delivery was so.much.fun.  I know, not what you typically hear, especially considering I went med-free but seriously, it was a blast, I definitely recommend them.
