I know this is a terrible thought but I am curious about something. Say you are pregnant and having all sorts of symptoms, etc. And say you lost the baby but didn't know it yet (no spotting). Would you still experience symptoms?
If you had just the fetal pole/sac but no baby attached, would you still get symptoms?
Re: Hypothetical
I never personally experienced this, but I think so since your body still produces pregnancy hormones.
Unfortunately, there is no way to know that your baby is alive and well other than hearing the heartbeat. You can have a missed miscarriage but still have all your pregnancy symptoms, and no spotting or cramping. It's scary. I have my first u/s next week and I am so afraid of this happening...

Will your doc let you listen to the heartbeat with a doppler?

No. The only thing they will do at the first appointment is do a physical, get me written up for blood work, and give me paperwork on being pregnant. I am so sad. I don't understand how they expect someone to wait until 20 weeks.
I'm sorry, I'd be really frustrated, too. I think if I were in your situation I'd probably buy (or rent) a doppler, which will let you hear the heartbeat at home. Quite a few ladies on the board have them, and I'm contemplating buying one. There are a bunch on amazon.com if you search "fetal doppler". Good luck to you.

When is your first appointment? You'll have an appointment every month, and if your appointment is later than 11 or 12 weeks dr will listen to baby's HB with the doppler. You'll have confirmation before 20 weeks.
My first appointment is this coming Wednesday. So you're thinking at my 2nd appointment the Dr. will definitely hookup the doppler?
This is my first BFP ever so I have no history of problems. But of course I'm scared to death of that possibly happening now. That's what the nurse said, since I don't have a past they won't do the u/s until 20w.
I didn't mean to freak you out. I haven't experienced anything weird but it is all getting to my head now. And it certainly doesn't help that my first u/s isn't until 20 weeks. I can't really imagine telling my boss I'm pg having not even heard/seen the baby yet.
You could always pay out of pocket for a 3D u/s. They usually aren't too expensive and the quality can be amazing.
Your OB will probably listen to the HB at every appointment you go to following your 1st. It might have been too early for the OB to try.
Don't worry, everything will be fine!
To answer your original question - yes, you can have a missed miscarriage and still have the symptoms. I did at 10.5 weeks (baby appeared to have died at 9). But the doctor/nurse will listen earlier than 20 weeks with a doppler at the least. They will also check the growth of your uterus, which would stop if the baby stopped growing.
But stop thinking negative thoughts and focus on being happy and that today you are pregnant and for all intents are carrying a healthy baby. Worrying or freaking out certainly won't do any good.
