The norm if you aren't high risk, you usually do not receive an u/s at your first appt. I was one of the people who requested one just to confirm the baby was alive and kicking at 8w. Fortunately, my insurance covered it, but I received the bill today for it and it was $200.
So, if your insurance won't cover it, but you want one anyway, I just wanted to give you a ballpark of what mine was in case you decide you want to pay for it OOP. Best would be to call your doctor's office and ask what their pricing is.
Re: FYI - cost of u/s
It depends on how they bill it. My insurance covered only one u/s, but I got 3 during my last pregnancy and never paid for any. My drs office coded it in such a way as a medical necessity (even though the 1st one was solely for dating purposes) and my insurance picked up the tab.
$200 is the OOP cost around here too, so that's a pretty good estimate.

Wow. I have to go home and look at my bill again, but mine cost either $600 or $800. My insurance covered all of it so I don't have to pay anything, but it just goes to show how cost can vary depending on where you are.
I did get a "stomach" ultrasound and they did an internal "dildo cam" one too to get a better view, so maybe that's part of it.
My husband is military and we have tricare prime so ours are covered as along as we go to the OB clinic at the Naval Hospital ... they normally only do two - ( 1 in 1st trimester to date and 1 in 2nd trimester for gender).
I however will be having additional ones do to dating wrong.
